An Informal Group of Ministers (IGoM), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on Saturday conducted a comprehensive review of the evolving situation in West Asia and assessed India\u2019s preparedness to tackle any potential fallout from the ongoing geopolitical tensions.<\/p>\n

The high-level meeting, held at Kartavya Bhawan-2, was attended by key Union Ministers including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, BJP President and Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Consumer Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi, Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, Ports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, and Minister of State Jitendra Singh, among others.<\/p>\n

Situation \u2018Uncertain and Volatile\u2019<\/h4>\n

Addressing the media, Rajnath Singh described the situation in West Asia as \u201cuncertain and volatile,\u201d stressing that India must remain prepared for both de-escalation and any renewed escalation. He emphasized that the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is taking swift and effective steps to mitigate potential risks arising from the conflict.<\/p>\n

Maritime Insurance Boost for Trade Security<\/h4>\n

Highlighting a major policy move, the Defence Minister referred to the Union Cabinet\u2019s approval for the creation of a \u2018Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool\u2019 with a sovereign guarantee of Rs. 12,980 crore. The initiative aims to ensure uninterrupted and affordable insurance coverage for Indian vessels, even while navigating volatile global maritime routes.<\/p>\n

He noted that the move would strengthen India\u2019s import-export ecosystem and enhance the resilience of maritime trade amid global uncertainties.<\/p>\n

Adequate Fuel and Energy Supplies<\/h4>\n

The government informed the ministers that India currently maintains sufficient fuel reserves, with stocks of crude oil, petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) adequate for over 60 days. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) reserves are sufficient for about 50 days, while Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) stocks can last approximately 40 days.<\/p>\n

To reduce dependency on the Strait of Hormuz, India has diversified its energy imports, sourcing crude oil and gas from regions including the United States, Australia, and Latin America. Supply requirements for April and May 2026 have largely been secured.<\/p>\n

Push for PNG, Reduction in LPG Dependence<\/h4>\n

In a significant shift toward cleaner energy, the government is actively promoting Piped Natural Gas (PNG). Since March 2026, over 4.76 lakh PNG connections have been activated, with more than 5.33 lakh new registrations. Notably, over 37,500 consumers have voluntarily surrendered LPG connections, reflecting a growing transition toward PNG usage.<\/p>\n

Measures to Secure Industrial Supply Chains<\/h4>\n

An inter-ministerial Joint Working Group has been established to ensure the availability of petrochemical feedstock for key sectors. The government has also mandated refinery companies to allocate essential materials such as C3 and C4 streams for critical industries.<\/p>\n

To support the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors, a provision of 1,000 metric tonnes per day from the LPG pool has been made. Since April 9, around 3,200 metric tonnes of propylene have already been supplied.<\/p>\n

Food Prices Stable, Fertiliser Stocks Adequate<\/h4>\n

The IGoM was informed that both wholesale and retail food prices remain stable. India also maintains robust fertiliser stocks, including urea, DAP, NPK, SSP, and MOP. Between March 1 and April 16, over 47.5 lakh tonnes of fertilisers were added to national reserves.<\/p>\n

Strict enforcement measures are also underway to prevent hoarding and black marketing. In April alone, over 8,300 raids were conducted across states, resulting in license suspensions and FIRs.<\/p>\n

Focus on Indian Diaspora and Coordination<\/h4>\n

Rajnath Singh reiterated that the safety and welfare of the Indian diaspora in the Gulf region remain a top priority. He directed officials to maintain constant communication with Indian missions abroad and ensure timely assistance to citizens if required.<\/p>\n

He also stressed the importance of coordination among states and union territories, urging the documentation and sharing of best practices for effective crisis management.<\/p>\n

Strengthening Response Framework<\/h4>\n

The Defence Minister concluded by calling for a systematic study of global mitigation strategies, suggesting that India should learn from international best practices to further strengthen its response framework.<\/p>\n

The meeting reflects the government\u2019s proactive approach in addressing global uncertainties while ensuring economic stability and national preparedness amid evolving geopolitical challenges.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
