In a significant move aimed at improving judicial efficiency, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday approved a proposal to increase the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court of India from 33 to 37 (excluding the Chief Justice of India).<\/p>\n

The decision paves the way for the introduction of the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 in Parliament. Once passed, the amendment will revise the existing Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956, raising the number of judges by four.<\/p>\n

The proposed legislation seeks to address the growing workload of the apex court by expanding its judicial capacity.
