In a landmark public health achievement, (WHO) has officially validated Australia as having eliminated trachoma as a public health problem. This milestone makes Australia the 30th country globally to reach this target and marks a major victory in the fight against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), particularly among Indigenous communities.<\/p>\n

Trachoma, caused by the bacterium , is the world\u2019s leading infectious cause of blindness. It spreads through close personal contact, contaminated surfaces, and flies that come into contact with eye and nasal discharge. Repeated infections can result in scarring of the eyelids, causing eyelashes to turn inward and eventually leading to irreversible blindness if left untreated.<\/p>\n

\u201cWHO congratulates Australia on this important achievement,\u201d said , Director-General of the WHO. He emphasized that the success reflects long-term commitment, strong partnerships, and a focus on addressing health inequities. \u201cIt brings us closer to a world free from the suffering caused by trachoma,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Decades of Targeted Action<\/h3>\n

Australia\u2019s path to elimination has been shaped by decades of sustained public health efforts, particularly in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities where the disease had persisted long after disappearing elsewhere in the country.<\/p>\n

A key turning point came in 2006 with the launch of the , which adopted the WHO-recommended SAFE strategy\u2014Surgery for advanced disease, Antibiotics to treat infection, Facial cleanliness, and Environmental improvements. Regular screening in at-risk communities and coordinated interventions involving federal and state governments, Indigenous health organizations, and local communities played a crucial role.<\/p>\n

Over time, improvements in housing, sanitation, and access to clean water, combined with targeted treatment strategies, significantly reduced infection rates. Trachoma is one of 21 diseases classified as neglected tropical diseases by WHO, affecting over one billion people worldwide\u2014primarily in underserved regions with limited access to clean water, sanitation, and healthcare.<\/p>\n

With this validation, Australia becomes the 63rd country globally\u2014and the 16th in the Western Pacific region\u2014to eliminate at least one NTD. Other NTDs still present in Australia include Buruli ulcer, leprosy, and scabies.<\/p>\n
