The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday announced the rollout of Phase 3 of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across 16 states and three Union Territories. The large-scale voter verification exercise will begin in a phased manner from May 30 and is expected to cover nearly 36.73 crore electors.<\/p>\n

The states and Union Territories included in this phase are Delhi, Odisha, Mizoram, Sikkim, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Telangana, Punjab, Karnataka, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Tripura, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.<\/p>\n

Among the states included in the latest phase, Punjab, Jharkhand, Karnataka, and Telangana are currently ruled by opposition parties.<\/p>\n

According to the Election Commission, more than 3.94 lakh Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct door-to-door verification of voters during the revision exercise. They will be assisted by around 3.42 lakh Booth Level Agents (BLAs) appointed by political parties to facilitate the enumeration process.<\/p>\n

The Election Commission stated that the schedule for the Special Intensive Revision in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh will be announced later due to adverse weather conditions and snowfall in several regions. With the completion of Phase 3, the electoral roll revision process would cover the entire country except these snow-bound regions.<\/p>\n

The Commission said the schedule for the latest phase has been carefully planned in view of the ongoing Census-related house listing operations, as both exercises share common field-level administrative machinery.<\/p>\n

Final Electoral Rolls to Be Published in Phases<\/h4>\n

The final electoral rolls for the states and UTs included in Phase 3 will be published on different dates later this year. Odisha, Sikkim, Mizoram, and Manipur will see the publication of their final electoral rolls on September 6, while Tripura\u2019s final revised voter list will be released on December 23.<\/p>\n

The final electoral rolls for Delhi, Karnataka, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand are scheduled to be published on October 7.<\/p>\n

The Election Commission has already completed the Special Intensive Revision exercise in Bihar, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep. A separate \u201cspecial revision\u201d exercise was also conducted in Assam.<\/p>\n

CEC Appeals for Public Participation<\/h4>\n

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar appealed to citizens to actively participate in the exercise and cooperate with officials during the verification process.<\/p>\n

\u201cI appeal to all electors to enthusiastically participate in Phase 3 of the SIR and fill their enumeration forms. The exercise is being conducted to ensure that only eligible voters are included in the electoral rolls and no ineligible names remain,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Over 5 Crore Names Removed in Previous Phase<\/h4>\n

The Election Commission also highlighted the impact of the previous phase of the revision exercise. In Phase 2, conducted across nine states and three Union Territories, the electoral rolls were reduced by approximately 10.2 percent after verification.<\/p>\n

More than 60 lakh deceased voters were removed from the lists during the exercise. The total voter base across the 12 states and UTs had stood at over 50.99 crore before the revision process began. Following the exercise, the number declined to 45.81 crore, reflecting a reduction of over 5.18 crore entries from the electoral rolls.<\/p>\n

The Election Commission maintained that the Special Intensive Revision is aimed at ensuring greater transparency, accuracy, and integrity in the electoral process ahead of future elections across the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
