United States Completes Rapid Mission to Remove Highly Enriched Uranium from Venezuela.<\/h1>\n

The United States, in coordination with Venezuela and the United Kingdom, has successfully completed a major nuclear security operation involving the removal of highly enriched uranium (HEU) from Venezuela\u2019s decommissioned RV-1 research reactor.<\/p>\n

The operation, carried out with technical support and monitoring from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), was completed more than two years ahead of schedule, according to U.S. officials.<\/p>\n

The RV-1 reactor, located near Caracas, was Venezuela\u2019s first and only nuclear reactor. Originally constructed under the United States\u2019 historic \u201cAtoms for Peace\u201d initiative, the facility was initially used for peaceful scientific research before later being repurposed for gamma-ray sterilization of medical equipment, food products, and industrial materials.<\/p>\n

The mission was led by the U.S. State Department\u2019s Bureau of Arms Control and Nonproliferation in collaboration with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Officials stated that the uranium material was packaged in late April and safely transported by a specialized British vessel to the Savannah River Site in South Carolina in early May for secure disposition and processing.<\/p>\n

According to U.S. authorities, approximately 13.5 kilograms of uranium enriched above the 20 percent threshold were removed from the reactor. The RV-1 reactor had remained inactive since the early 1990s, and the material was considered surplus and potentially sensitive from a nuclear security perspective.<\/p>\n

The IAEA played a key role throughout the mission by providing nuclear safety guidance, technical expertise, and oversight during the transportation process. The agency described the operation as \u201ccomplex and sensitive,\u201d involving secure land and sea transport from South America to the United States.<\/p>\n

U.S. officials described the mission as an important achievement in global nonproliferation efforts aimed at reducing the risk of nuclear materials being diverted for unauthorized or dangerous use. The NNSA noted that, worldwide, it has now successfully removed or confirmed the disposition of more than 7,340 kilograms of weapons-usable nuclear material.<\/p>\n

The operation also highlights increasing international cooperation on nuclear security issues involving the United States, Venezuela, the United Kingdom, and the IAEA. Analysts said the successful transfer strengthens global efforts to secure legacy nuclear materials and prevent nuclear proliferation risks.<\/p>\n
