Responding to the nationwide call given by the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD), the Mandi District Chemists and Druggists Association on Wednesday observed a one-day symbolic strike against the illegal and unregulated online sale of medicines and the growing threat it poses to small and licensed pharmacy businesses across the country.<\/p>\n

As part of the protest, medical stores and chemist shops across Mandi district remained completely closed throughout the day in a united show of support for the nationwide agitation. Despite the shutdown, the association ensured that emergency and life-saving medicines continued to be made available to critically ill and needy patients in keeping with their social and humanitarian responsibilities.<\/p>\n

Under the leadership of association president Yogesh Verma and secretary Parvesh Gupta, representatives of the chemist community submitted a detailed memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the local administration.<\/p>\n

In the memorandum, the association highlighted three major concerns related to the rapidly growing online pharmacy sector. The first demand called for a complete ban on illegal and rule-violating online sale of medicines. The second issue focused on prohibiting home delivery of medicines without valid and verified medical prescriptions. The third concern was against the practice of \u201cdeep discounting\u201d adopted by various online e-pharmacy platforms, which, according to the association, is causing severe financial losses to small traditional chemists and threatening their livelihoods.<\/p>\n

The association also urged the central government to immediately withdraw healthcare-related regulations GSR 817(E) and GSR 220(E), alleging that online pharmacy platforms and quick commerce operators are misusing these provisions to carry out unsafe and unregulated medicine deliveries. According to the chemists, such practices pose a serious risk to public health and patient safety.<\/p>\n

Representatives from the pharmaceutical trade expressed strong concern that medicines are not ordinary consumer goods or grocery items that can be sold without strict supervision. They argued that uncontrolled online sale of medicines without physical verification and professional oversight directly threatens public health as well as the regulatory framework established under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.<\/p>\n

The protesting chemists also recalled their contribution during the COVID-19 pandemic, stating that when most services were shut down, chemists worked as frontline healthcare providers and \u201cCorona Warriors,\u201d risking their lives to ensure uninterrupted medicine supply to citizens across the country. However, despite repeatedly submitting evidence and representations regarding illegal online medicine sales, they alleged that no concrete legal action has been taken by the concerned authorities so far.<\/p>\n

The Mandi chemist community strongly appealed to the central government to take immediate corrective and punitive measures to safeguard patients, protect public health, and secure the livelihoods of millions of licensed chemists and employees dependent on the pharmaceutical retail sector.<\/p>\n

The strike in Mandi remained peaceful and disciplined throughout the day. The movement also received support from several local trade and business organizations, including the Vyapar Mandal Mandi, the Federation of Medical Sales Representatives Association, and HIMROO, all of which extended their solidarity with the chemists\u2019 campaign and backed the demand for protection of small traders and regulated pharmaceutical practices.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
