A devastating overnight fire tore through a dormitory at a girls\u2019 boarding school in Kenya\u2019s Rift Valley region, killing at least 16 students and injuring dozens more, authorities confirmed on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The tragic incident occurred shortly after midnight at the Utumishi Girls\u2019 Academy Senior School in Gilgil, a town located in west-central Kenya. According to Kenya\u2019s Education Minister Julius Migos, the blaze burned for more than two hours before firefighters managed to contain it.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters, Migos said that 79 students were injured in the incident, though 71 had already been discharged from hospital after receiving treatment for minor injuries. Several others remain under medical care.<\/p>\n

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been established. Authorities have launched investigations to determine how the blaze started and why it spread so rapidly through the dormitory building.<\/p>\n

Television footage aired by local Kenyan media showed smoke-blackened walls, shattered windows, and scenes of panic as anxious parents and relatives gathered outside the school gates searching for information about missing students.<\/p>\n

One parent, Eunice Mureithi, whose daughter survived the fire, described the terrifying moments during the blaze in an interview with NTV television.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fire started from an upper dome and spread all over within that time,\u201d she said. \u201cPart of the structure had barricaded one side, making it difficult for students to escape. Fortunately, many of them managed to get out.\u201d<\/p>\n

School fires remain a serious concern in Kenya. Government records indicate that more than 100 school fires were reported in 2024 alone. Researchers and education experts say many such incidents have historically been linked to student protests over harsh disciplinary practices, overcrowding, and poor living conditions in boarding schools.<\/p>\n

The latest tragedy comes less than a year after another deadly school fire in nearby Nyeri County, where 21 students were killed at a primary boarding school in 2024. The cause of that fire was never conclusively determined.<\/p>\n

Kenya has witnessed several fatal school fires over the years, including one of the country\u2019s deadliest incidents in 2001, when 67 boys died in a dormitory blaze at Kyanguli Secondary School near Nairobi. Authorities later concluded that the fire had been caused by arson.<\/p>\n
