Chief Minister Launches \u2018Safai Mitra Scheme\u2019 to Empower Waste Management Workers Across the State.<\/h2>\n

In a significant step towards promoting climate resilience, environmental sustainability and inclusive development, the Himachal Pradesh Government on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The agreement aims to strengthen collaboration in areas such as climate action, waste management, biodiversity conservation and green livelihoods.<\/p>\n

The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Secretary, Environment, Science, Technology and Climate Change, Sushil Singla, signed the agreement on behalf of the State Government, while Dr. Angela Lusigi, Resident Representative of UNDP in India, signed on behalf of the international organization.<\/p>\n

The partnership seeks to support Himachal Pradesh in advancing climate-resilient, inclusive and sustainable development through a wide range of initiatives. Key areas of cooperation include promotion of the circular economy, scientific waste management practices, social inclusion of waste management workers, electric mobility solutions for waste collection and other climate-resilient development priorities.<\/p>\n

The MoU also encompasses natural resource management and biodiversity conservation. Under the agreement, both parties will collaborate on landscape restoration, ecosystem-based adaptation, nature-based solutions and biodiversity-linked sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities. Special emphasis will be placed on protecting critical habitats and biodiversity corridors while strengthening regulatory and governance frameworks to enhance ecological resilience in climate-vulnerable regions of the state.<\/p>\n

Another important aspect of the partnership is its focus on gender-responsive and socially inclusive development. The initiative aims to ensure active participation of women, marginalized communities and informal workers in planning, decision-making and implementation processes.<\/p>\n

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said that the collaboration with UNDP would help integrate global best practices with local solutions to safeguard the fragile Himalayan ecosystem while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for the people of the state.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe agreement will strengthen our efforts to balance environmental conservation with economic development. It will enable Himachal Pradesh to adopt innovative and sustainable approaches to address climate challenges while generating green employment opportunities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the partnership would accelerate the state’s progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and reinforce its position as a leader in sustainable development initiatives.<\/p>\n

He further stated that the MoU aligns with the State Government\u2019s vision of transforming Himachal Pradesh into a Green Energy State and establishing it as a model of sustainable development in the Himalayan region.<\/p>\n

CM Sukhu added that the collaboration would focus on knowledge exchange, institutional capacity building, implementation of pilot projects and mobilization of climate finance to support the state’s long-term environmental and developmental objectives.<\/p>\n

\u2018Safai Mitra Scheme\u2019 Launched<\/h4>\n

On the occasion, the Chief Minister also launched the Safai Mitra Scheme, a welfare initiative aimed at empowering informal waste management workers across Himachal Pradesh.<\/p>\n

Highlighting the importance of sanitation and waste management workers, the Chief Minister said that these frontline workers play an indispensable role in maintaining cleanliness, public health and environmental sustainability through their dedicated services.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that ensuring the dignity, safety and socio-economic empowerment of Safai Mitras forms a crucial component of the State Government\u2019s circular economy vision.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Safai Mitra Scheme will provide greater recognition, support and opportunities to waste management workers who make significant contributions towards maintaining a clean and healthy environment. Their welfare and inclusion remain a priority for the government,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The initiative is expected to strengthen social security and improve livelihood prospects for thousands of informal waste management workers while enhancing the efficiency and inclusiveness of the state’s waste management ecosystem.<\/p>\n

The signing of the MoU and the launch of the Safai Mitra Scheme together mark a major milestone in Himachal Pradesh\u2019s efforts to pursue sustainable growth, climate resilience and social inclusion, reinforcing the government’s commitment to building an environmentally responsible and equitable future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
