New Delhi\/Leh:<\/p>\n

In a significant boost to connectivity, tourism, and national security, the Central Government has approved the construction of three major tunnels along the strategic Manali-Leh Highway. The ambitious project, estimated to cost approximately Rs. 16,750 crore, is expected to reduce the travel distance between Manali and Leh by nearly 50 kilometres and cut travel time by around three hours.<\/p>\n

The project is aimed at transforming the Manali-Leh route into an all-weather corridor, ensuring year-round connectivity to Ladakh, which currently remains vulnerable to prolonged winter closures due to heavy snowfall and extreme weather conditions.<\/p>\n

The development follows the success of the Atal Tunnel, inaugurated in 2020, which bypassed the snow-bound Rohtang Pass and reduced travel distance by 46 kilometres while saving nearly four hours of travel time. Building on that achievement, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is now preparing to overcome three more challenging mountain passes on the route.<\/p>\n

Baralacha Pass Tunnel<\/h4>\n

The largest component of the project will be the tunnel beneath Baralacha Pass, located at an altitude of approximately 16,040 feet. The pass remains covered in snow for six to seven months every year, severely affecting traffic movement between Darcha and Sarchu.<\/p>\n

The proposed tunnel, estimated to cost Rs. 8,800 crore, will enable near year-round connectivity on this crucial stretch. The project is expected to eliminate the need to wait for snow clearance and seasonal reopening of the pass, ensuring smoother movement of passengers, goods, and essential supplies.<\/p>\n

Lachulung La Tunnel<\/h4>\n

Another major tunnel will be constructed beneath Lachulung La, where the existing highway near Pang is frequently affected by landslides and adverse weather conditions.<\/p>\n

With an estimated cost of\u00a0Rs. 4,500 crore, the tunnel will bypass some of the most hazardous sections of the highway, including avalanche-prone areas and dangerous hairpin bends. The project is expected to significantly enhance road safety and improve travel reliability throughout the year.<\/p>\n

Tanglang La Tunnel<\/h4>\n

The third tunnel will pass beneath Tanglang La, one of the highest motorable mountain passes in the world at an altitude of around 17,480 feet.<\/p>\n

Estimated to cost Rs. 2,250 crore, the tunnel will ensure uninterrupted connectivity between Upshi and Leh, eliminating the annual road closures that typically occur during winter months. The project is expected to play a crucial role in maintaining access to Ladakh even during harsh weather conditions.<\/p>\n

Economic and Tourism Benefits<\/h4>\n

Experts believe the benefits of the project extend far beyond reducing travel time. A year-round road connection is expected to stabilize the supply chain in Ladakh, where essential commodities such as food items, fuel, and daily necessities often become more expensive when roads remain closed during winter.<\/p>\n

The tourism sector is also expected to witness a major boost. The journey from Manali to Leh, currently a challenging two-day trip for many travelers, could be completed in approximately ten hours. Improved accessibility is likely to attract a larger number of tourists, adventure enthusiasts, cyclists, and short-duration travelers, creating new opportunities for local businesses and hospitality services.<\/p>\n

Improved Safety and Strategic Importance<\/h4>\n

The tunnels will also enhance road safety by reducing exposure to snow-covered stretches, avalanche zones, landslide-prone areas, and dangerous mountain bends where accidents frequently occur.<\/p>\n

From a strategic perspective, the project is expected to strengthen military logistics and operational readiness in the border region. Faster and more reliable access to forward areas, including strategic sectors such as Pangong and Demchok, will improve the movement of personnel, equipment, and supplies, particularly during periods when air operations are affected by adverse weather.<\/p>\n

Once completed, the three tunnels are expected to transform the Manali-Leh Highway into one of India\u2019s most reliable high-altitude transport corridors, bringing substantial benefits to tourism, trade, local communities, and national security while making travel to Ladakh safer, faster, and more accessible throughout the year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
