The report paints a stark picture of how climate change is increasingly reshaping the lives of children worldwide, particularly in vulnerable and conflict-affected regions.

Climate Crisis Becoming a Daily Reality for Children

To illustrate the growing impact of climate change, UNICEF highlighted the story of 15-year-old Lorna from Papua New Guinea. After floods destroyed the only footbridge connecting her community to school, she and her classmates have been forced to swim across a fast-moving river every day while carrying their books and uniforms in waterproof containers.

According to UNICEF, such experiences are no longer isolated incidents but represent a broader global trend affecting children across continents.

“For these children, climate change is not a future threat—it is a present reality,” Slaymaker said.

Nearly Every Child Exposed to Climate Hazards

UNICEF’s latest analysis found that almost every child on Earth is exposed to at least one climate hazard, including floods, droughts, storms, heatwaves, or other extreme weather events.

More alarmingly, approximately 1.1 billion children—nearly half of the world’s child population—are exposed to at least three overlapping climate hazards, while some regions face as many as six concurrent threats.

The organization warned that overlapping climate shocks create compounded risks, making recovery increasingly difficult for affected communities.

Regions Facing the Greatest Threats

The report identified several regions where children face particularly severe and overlapping climate risks.

In the Sahel region of Africa, millions of children are simultaneously exposed to extreme heat, prolonged drought, and frequent sand and dust storms.

Meanwhile, countries such as Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Pakistan rank among the most climate-vulnerable locations, with children experiencing multiple hazards at high intensity.

Small island nations, including Haiti and Vanuatu, also face acute risks, where a single tropical storm can devastate infrastructure, disrupt services, and overwhelm emergency response systems.

Climate Shocks Fuel Health and Nutrition Crises

UNICEF emphasized that climate hazards rarely occur in isolation. Instead, one disaster often worsens the effects of another.

For example, drought can lead to food shortages and malnutrition, while subsequent flooding can contaminate water supplies and trigger outbreaks of diseases such as cholera.

As a result, children often struggle to recover from one crisis before facing another.

The agency warned that repeated climate shocks are increasing the burden on already fragile health and sanitation systems around the world.

Water and Sanitation Challenges Worsening

According to UNICEF, approximately 634 million children worldwide still lack access to safe drinking water, while one billion children do not have access to safe sanitation services.

Climate-related disasters are further straining these essential services, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases and other health emergencies.

Diarrheal diseases, which remain among the leading causes of death for children under five, are expected to become more prevalent as climate impacts intensify.

Education Disruptions on a Massive Scale

Climate hazards are also disrupting education on an unprecedented scale.

UNICEF reported that at least 242 million children experienced school disruptions due to climate-related events in 2024 alone.

Floods, storms, droughts, and extreme heat have damaged schools, displaced families, and interrupted learning for millions of children, threatening long-term educational outcomes.

Beyond education, displacement caused by climate disasters increases children’s exposure to family separation, exploitation, violence, and psychological trauma.

Conflict Zones Face Heightened Risks

The report notes that climate impacts are especially severe in countries already affected by conflict and instability.

Children living in places such as the Central African Republic, Chad, Haiti, and Sudan face compounded vulnerabilities because they often lack reliable access to healthcare, nutrition programs, clean water, and sanitation services.

In these settings, even relatively moderate climate events can become life-threatening emergencies.

UNICEF Calls for Urgent Child-Focused Climate Action

UNICEF is urging governments, development agencies, and international partners to prioritize children in climate adaptation and resilience strategies.

The organization highlighted several proven solutions, including:

– Expanding solar-powered infrastructure to keep schools operating during power outages.
– Developing sustainable groundwater sources to secure drinking water supplies.
– Upgrading sanitation systems to improve water recycling and agricultural resilience.
– Building climate-resilient shelters to protect families from storms and extreme weather.

According to UNICEF, identifying regions where climate hazards overlap can help governments target investments more effectively and protect children before disasters strike.

A Growing Global Emergency

UNICEF concluded that while children have contributed the least to global greenhouse gas emissions, they are disproportionately bearing the consequences of climate change.

The agency warned that without immediate investment, stronger climate policies, and child-centered adaptation measures, the risks facing today’s children will continue to grow.

“Climate change is not only changing the planet,” Slaymaker said. “It is changing childhood itself.”

The report serves as a renewed call for urgent global action to strengthen resilience, protect essential services, and ensure that children can survive and thrive in an increasingly climate-affected world.

UNICEF Warns 1.1 Billion Children Face Multiple Climate Threats as Global Risks Intensify.
