According to Professor B.V. Sharma, Director of the Anthropological Survey of India, the collaboration is expected to significantly strengthen scientific research on the Harappan civilization through the integration of archaeology, anthropology, genetics, and environmental sciences.

Largest Known Indus-Saraswati Settlement

Located in Haryana and spread over approximately 550 hectares, Rakhigarhi is widely regarded as the largest known settlement of the Indus-Saraswati Civilization. Archaeological evidence from the site has revealed continuous habitation from the Early Harappan to the Mature Harappan periods, showcasing sophisticated urban planning, drainage systems, craft production centres, trade networks, and burial grounds.

During the 2025–26 excavation season, archaeologists from ASI’s Excavation Branch-II, Greater Noida, unearthed eight burials at Mound No. 7, an area previously identified as an ancient cemetery. Among the discoveries were three complete human skeletons along with skeletal fragments recovered from several other burials.

These remains have now been transferred to AnSI’s specialized ancient human skeletal repository and laboratory in Kolkata, where they will undergo detailed scientific examination. Officials indicated that additional skeletal materials recovered during the excavation are expected to be transferred in the coming days.

Unlocking Secrets of a 5,000-Year-Old Civilization

Researchers believe the skeletal remains offer a rare opportunity to employ cutting-edge scientific methods to study the Harappan population. Planned investigations include ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis, stable isotope studies, osteological assessments, palaeopathological examinations, and environmental reconstruction.

These advanced techniques are expected to help scientists answer long-standing questions regarding ancestry, migration patterns, dietary habits, disease prevalence, adaptation strategies, and interactions between humans and their environment during the Harappan period.

The research programme will be undertaken in collaboration with several leading scientific institutions, including the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP), Lucknow, University College London (UCL), and a team of ancient DNA specialists from Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

Scholars Welcome the Initiative

Experts from various disciplines have welcomed the transfer of the skeletal remains for scientific analysis.

Professor Vijay Prakash, former faculty member at Andhra University, described the move as an important step toward preserving and scientifically studying India’s biological heritage for future generations.

Professor Udai Pratap Singh of Lucknow University said the initiative would strengthen India’s palaeoanthropological research tradition and help reconstruct aspects of population history, health, lifestyle, and cultural adaptation within the Indus-Saraswati Civilization.

Renowned geneticist and Padma Shri awardee Dr. Kumaraswamy Thangaraj of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, highlighted the significance of ancient DNA research. According to him, genomic studies of the Rakhigarhi remains could provide crucial information about genetic ancestry and reveal how human populations evolved and adapted over thousands of years since around 3000 BCE.

Professor Gyaneshwer Chaubey of Banaras Hindu University described the collaboration as a major milestone in reconstructing the genomic history of the Harappan Civilization. He noted that combining genetic, osteological, and isotopic evidence would offer valuable insights into the ancestry, health, mobility, and lifestyles of ancient populations while also creating opportunities to train a new generation of Indian scientists in palaeogenomics.

Revival of Palaeoanthropological Research

Officials noted that the Anthropological Survey of India has a long history of conducting osteological studies on remains recovered from Indus-Saraswati archaeological sites since its establishment in 1945. However, research activities in this area had gradually declined over the years.

In recent years, AnSI has initiated efforts to revive palaeoanthropological research through the creation of dedicated scientific teams and specialized training programmes. The institution has already completed palaeopathological studies on skeletal remains from several Indus-Saraswati sites and is preparing scientific publications based on those findings.

The addition of the Rakhigarhi remains is expected to further strengthen India’s capabilities in ancient DNA research and related disciplines.

Expanding Scientific Collaboration

AnSI plans to broaden its collaborative network by partnering with institutions such as the Zoological Survey of India, Botanical Survey of India, Geological Survey of India, and research groups working in the field of palaeoclimate studies.

Anthropologist Professor Subhash Walimbe, formerly associated with Deccan College, Pune, emphasized that detailed anthropological examination of the remains could provide valuable information about how urbanization influenced human health and biological adaptation during the Harappan era.

Former National Monument Authority Chairman Professor Kishore K. Basa also welcomed the renewed focus on skeletal biological research, noting its importance not only for anthropology but also for archaeology, history, genetics, nutrition, disease history, and population studies.

New Chapter in Understanding India’s Ancient Past

Officials described the collaboration between ASI and AnSI as a landmark effort to integrate multiple scientific disciplines in the study of India’s ancient civilizations. The findings from the Rakhigarhi skeletal remains are expected to contribute significantly to understanding the origins, health, mobility, genetic history, and environmental adaptations of the people who inhabited one of the world’s earliest urban centres more than 4,500 years ago.

As scientific investigations begin, researchers hope the discoveries from Rakhigarhi will help fill critical gaps in knowledge about the Harappan Civilization and offer fresh perspectives on the evolution of ancient societies in the Indian subcontinent.

Rakhigarhi Human Remains Sent for Advanced Scientific Study, Opening New Window into Harappan Civilization.
