Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College and Hospital (SLBSGMCH), Nerchowk in Mandi district, has emerged as a pioneer in advanced healthcare delivery in Himachal Pradesh with the successful implementation of its state-of-the-art robotic surgery programme. The initiative has significantly enhanced surgical precision, improved patient outcomes, and expanded access to world-class minimally invasive surgical care within the state.<\/p>\n

The hospital installed the fourth-generation da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System in January 2026 at a cost of approximately Rs. 28 crore. Following the installation, surgeons from the Departments of General Surgery and Obstetrics & Gynaecology underwent extensive training that included simulator-based learning, wet-lab sessions, and observership programmes at leading healthcare institutions such as Yashoda Hospital, Ghaziabad, and Fortis Hospital, Mohali.<\/p>\n

The robotic surgery facility was formally inaugurated by Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on March 6, 2026. On the day of inauguration, three robotic-assisted surgical procedures were successfully performed under the supervision of experts, marking the beginning of a new era in advanced surgical care at the institution.<\/p>\n

The Department of General Surgery commenced regular robotic surgical services on March 23, 2026, while the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology began offering robotic-assisted procedures in May 2026 after completing the required training and preparation. Currently, robotic surgeries are being conducted three days a week by the General Surgery Department and two days a week by the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department.<\/p>\n

In a short span of time, the programme has achieved remarkable success. A total of 61 robotic-assisted surgeries have been successfully performed at the institution, including 51 procedures by the Department of General Surgery and 10 procedures by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.<\/p>\n

Most robotic procedures carried out by the General Surgery Department have involved cholecystectomies (gallbladder removal surgeries) and hernia repairs. The department has also successfully undertaken several complex and advanced oncological procedures. These include a right hemicolectomy for a neuroendocrine tumour of the appendix and a low anterior resection with total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer, demonstrating the capability of the institution to manage highly specialised surgical cases using robotic technology.<\/p>\n

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology has also recorded encouraging outcomes. Among the ten robotic hysterectomies performed so far, seven were conducted for patients suffering from uterine fibroids, while three were undertaken for abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB). In addition, the department successfully carried out a robotic surgical procedure for an ovarian cyst, further expanding the scope of robotic-assisted gynaecological care available to women in the region.<\/p>\n

Hospital authorities highlighted that the success of the robotic surgery programme is the result of the collective efforts of surgeons, anaesthesiologists, operation theatre technicians, nursing officers, and support staff. The administration also played a vital role in establishing and strengthening the programme.<\/p>\n

The institution expressed gratitude for the guidance and support provided by Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Principal; Dr. D.K. Verma, former Principal; Dr. Ratti Ram Negi, Senior Medical Superintendent; and Sanjeev Kumar, Additional Director (Administration), whose contributions were instrumental in the successful implementation of the programme.<\/p>\n

Robotic-assisted surgery offers several advantages over conventional surgical techniques, including enhanced precision, smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery. By bringing this advanced technology to a government medical institution, SLBSGMCH Nerchowk has made cutting-edge healthcare more accessible and affordable for the people of Himachal Pradesh.<\/p>\n
