Prime Minister Keir Starmer today announced the government’s new Defence Investment Plan during a speech in Maidenhead, describing it as a decisive step toward strengthening Britain’s national security, enhancing military capabilities, and ensuring the country is prepared for future global challenges.<\/p>\n

In his address, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine, emphasizing that Britain would continue to stand alongside President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people in their fight for a just and lasting peace.<\/p>\n

“I have been proud to stand with Ukraine and with President Zelenskyy over the last two years and to lead the Coalition of the Willing together with France and Germany to support a just and lasting peace,” he said, adding that these efforts are part of restoring Britain’s standing on the world stage.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister praised the bipartisan support shown by successive British governments since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, saying it reflected the nation’s enduring values.<\/p>\n

“It is a great credit to this nation that every Prime Minister since the invasion has stood full square behind Ukraine, and I have no doubt that will continue for as long as it takes,” he said.<\/p>\n

A Call for National Resolve<\/h4>\n

Framing the current international security environment as a defining moment for Britain, the Prime Minister urged the country to embrace resilience rather than retreat from global responsibilities.<\/p>\n

“Moments like this ask fundamental questions of all of us\u2014not just about how we respond, but about who we are as a nation and who we choose to be,” he stated.<\/p>\n

Rejecting the idea of Britain becoming a passive observer in world affairs, he declared that the country has historically demonstrated courage and determination during times of crisis.<\/p>\n

“The Britain I believe in finds its greatness in these moments. In times of crisis, we stand tall, we summon that British spirit of grit and resolve and seize the moment with both hands\u2014proud of our values, proud of who we are.”<\/p>\n

Tribute to the Armed Forces<\/h4>\n

The Prime Minister paid tribute to members of the British Armed Forces serving across the globe, highlighting their sacrifices and commitment to national security.<\/p>\n

He spoke of crews aboard Britain’s nuclear submarines, recalling meeting one sailor who returned home after a lengthy deployment to meet his four-month-old child for the first time.<\/p>\n

He also praised:<\/p>\n

British troops stationed on NATO’s eastern flank;<\/p>\n

Royal Marines safeguarding the northern frontier;<\/p>\n

Aircraft carrier crews currently operating in the North Atlantic to deter Russian aggression; and<\/p>\n

Royal Air Force pilots conducting missions to defend allied interests in the Gulf.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister said these servicemen and women exemplify Britain’s courage and commitment to international peace and security.<\/p>\n

Recognising Those Behind the Frontline<\/h4>\n

Beyond the military, the Prime Minister acknowledged the essential contribution made by civilian workers whose efforts underpin Britain’s resilience.<\/p>\n

He praised employees in the National Health Service, public services, the energy sector, apprentices, engineers, and those developing new technologies necessary for national security and economic growth.<\/p>\n

“The workers in our NHS, our public services, our energy sector, our apprentices and engineers building the technologies we need\u2014all of those on whom our national resilience depends,” he said.<\/p>\n

Defence Investment Plan as a Step Toward the Future<\/h4>\n

Although the speech focused heavily on national values and resilience, the Prime Minister described the Defence Investment Plan as a major milestone in preparing Britain for future security challenges while supporting economic development through investment in defence industries and advanced technologies.<\/p>\n

He expressed confidence that Britain would not only overcome current geopolitical challenges but emerge stronger.<\/p>\n

“I know we will continue to rise to this moment\u2014not just to weather the coming storms, but to use this moment to reach towards a better future\u2014the stronger, fairer country that the British people deserve and that I have sought to build.”<\/p>\n

Concluding his address, the Prime Minister described the Defence Investment Plan as “a decisive step on that journey” before thanking the audience.<\/p>\n
