The United States and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cybersecurity cooperation, unveiling an ambitious roadmap to tackle emerging cyber threats, strengthen critical infrastructure protection, and promote cyber resilience across the Indo-Pacific region.<\/p>\n

The commitments were announced in a joint statement issued following the 11th U.S.-Japan Cyber Dialogue, held in Washington, D.C., on June 30 and July 1, 2026.<\/p>\n

The dialogue was co-chaired by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Emerging Threats and Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, alongside Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Cybersecurity Office. Senior representatives from a wide range of government agencies from both countries participated, underscoring the strategic importance of cybersecurity within the U.S.-Japan Alliance.<\/p>\n

The U.S. delegation included officials from the White House National Security Council, the Office of the National Cyber Director, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Department of War, the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Department of Homeland Security, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).<\/p>\n

Japan’s delegation comprised representatives from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Defense, the National Police Agency, and the Public Security Intelligence Agency.<\/p>\n

In the joint statement, both governments reaffirmed their shared determination to confront evolving threats in cyberspace and enhance cooperation in response to increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks by state-sponsored and non-state actors.<\/p>\n

A key outcome of the dialogue was the decision to leverage emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), to improve cyber defense capabilities. Both countries also pledged to promote secure and sovereign cloud infrastructure built on trusted technologies to facilitate greater information sharing and interoperability between their governments.<\/p>\n

Recognizing the growing complexity of cyber threats, the United States and Japan agreed to expand the exchange of cyber threat intelligence and strategic assessments, particularly regarding attacks targeting critical infrastructure and the increasing use of AI by malicious cyber actors.<\/p>\n

The two allies also committed to aligning their international cyber policies and sharing their respective national cybersecurity strategies to strengthen cooperation in global cyber governance.<\/p>\n

Another major focus of the dialogue was combating cybercrime across the Indo-Pacific. The two governments agreed to work together against cybercrime syndicates and scam centers through coordinated law enforcement operations, diplomatic engagement, and collaboration with private-sector partners where appropriate.<\/p>\n

Beyond bilateral cooperation, the United States and Japan pledged to jointly provide technical assistance to improve cyber resilience and cybersecurity capacity in third countries throughout the Indo-Pacific, reflecting their broader commitment to regional stability and digital security.<\/p>\n

The two countries also agreed to accelerate the domestic adoption of Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) to prepare critical digital infrastructure for future quantum computing threats, which experts believe could undermine existing encryption technologies.<\/p>\n

Concluding the dialogue, both governments reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close coordination on cyber policy, operational cooperation, technical assistance, and public-private partnerships. They also agreed to hold follow-up consultations to advance the priorities identified during the 11th U.S.-Japan Cyber Dialogue, reinforcing cybersecurity as a key pillar of the longstanding U.S.-Japan strategic alliance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
