Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday visited the iconic UNESCO World Heritage Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, underscoring the deep-rooted civilizational and cultural ties between India and Indonesia. In a special diplomatic gesture, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto accompanied the Prime Minister during the visit.<\/p>\n

The two leaders jointly unveiled a commemorative plaque marking the commencement of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)-led conservation and restoration project at the historic temple complex. The initiative reflects the growing cultural cooperation between the two countries and India’s continued commitment to preserving shared heritage.<\/p>\n

Constructed in the 9th century, the Prambanan Temple Complex is the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia and is dedicated to the Trimurti\u2014Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva. Renowned for its towering architecture and intricate stone carvings, the temple is regarded as one of Southeast Asia’s most significant examples of Hindu art and architecture. It has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains a powerful symbol of the centuries-old cultural and historical connections between India and Indonesia.<\/p>\n

The restoration project follows the understanding reached during President Prabowo Subianto’s State Visit to India in 2025, when both leaders agreed to explore India’s assistance in the conservation and restoration of the temples within the Prambanan complex. The unveiling of the plaque formally marks the beginning of this collaborative heritage conservation effort.<\/p>\n

India has earned international recognition for its expertise in archaeological conservation and heritage restoration across Southeast Asia.
