Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has urged Parliament to hold an open vote on a proposed amendment to Italy’s electoral law, arguing that lawmakers should publicly demonstrate whether they genuinely support giving citizens greater influence in choosing their parliamentary representatives.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued ahead of the parliamentary vote, Meloni said the amendment, proposed by her party Fratelli d’Italia and backed by the governing majority, seeks to introduce a system of voter preferences in the electoral law. She noted that such a reform has long been demanded not only by the ruling coalition but also by several opposition parties.<\/p>\n

Meloni said the upcoming vote presents an opportunity to determine whether political parties that have consistently advocated for allowing voters to choose their parliamentarians truly believe in the principle or have merely used the issue for political messaging.<\/p>\n

“At this point, I think a truth operation is due,” the Prime Minister said, adding that the vote would reveal whether those calling for electoral reform are acting out of conviction or “just to make fun of Italians.”<\/p>\n

The Italian Prime Minister argued that the amendment should be decided through an open electronic vote rather than a secret ballot, saying transparency is essential on an issue that directly affects democratic representation. She challenged opposition parties not to seek a secret vote, insisting that every legislator should publicly take responsibility for their position.<\/p>\n

“I challenge the opposition not to ask for the secret vote. Everyone assumes responsibility for their choices,” Meloni said.<\/p>\n

The amendment is scheduled to be voted on later in the day. If approved, it would introduce voter preference mechanisms into Italy’s electoral law, a move supporters say would strengthen democratic accountability by allowing citizens to have a greater say in selecting members of Parliament.<\/p>\n

The proposal has reignited debate over Italy’s electoral system, with the government portraying the amendment as a step toward enhancing voter participation and transparency, while opposition parties are expected to outline their positions during the parliamentary proceedings.
