The Israeli government has approved a major security initiative to strengthen efforts against organized crime in Arab communities, authorizing the Israel Security Agency (ISA\/Shin Bet) to play an expanded role alongside the Israel Police. The plan, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Social Equality Minister May Golan, and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, is backed by an investment of approximately NIS 497 million.<\/p>\n

According to the government, the funding will be redirected from the existing 550 Five-Year Plan to support what officials described as an unprecedented national campaign targeting criminal organizations, illegal weapons trafficking, and violent crime in the Arab sector.<\/p>\n

Under the approved framework, approximately NIS 364.5 million will be allocated to the ISA to establish a dedicated unit focused on combating weapons smuggling and illegal arms trafficking. The funding will also be used to strengthen the agency’s intelligence-gathering, technological capabilities, and operational resources.<\/p>\n

The Israel Police will receive approximately NIS 132.4 million to establish a dedicated national unit tasked with addressing organized crime in Arab society. The allocation includes funding for advanced technological systems and the procurement of modern operational equipment aimed at improving law enforcement capabilities.<\/p>\n

In addition to the financial investment, the government approved the creation of 130 new personnel positions within the ISA beginning in 2026. The agency will also receive a permanent annual budget allocation of NIS 35 million starting in the same year to support its expanded responsibilities.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the decision as a significant milestone in Israel’s efforts to tackle organized crime, calling violence in Arab communities “a national plague.” He said integrating the ISA’s intelligence, operational, and technological capabilities with those of the Israel Police and other law enforcement agencies would enhance the state’s ability to identify and dismantle criminal networks.<\/p>\n

“We will not accept a reality of violence, extortion, and murder in our streets,” Netanyahu said, adding that the government remains committed to restoring public security and targeting the leadership and infrastructure of criminal organizations. He also praised Ministers May Golan and Itamar Ben-Gvir for advancing the initiative.<\/p>\n
