In a landmark move aimed at strengthening healthcare services and medical education, the Himachal Pradesh Government has proposed the largest-ever expansion of postgraduate (PG) medical seats in the state’s government medical colleges. The proposal seeks to increase the number of PG seats from the existing 277 to 597, more than doubling the current intake in a single phase.<\/p>\n

The initiative is expected to create greater opportunities for medical graduates to pursue postgraduate education within the state, reduce the shortage of specialist doctors across various disciplines, and significantly improve the quality of healthcare services available to the people of Himachal Pradesh.<\/p>\n

According to the proposal, Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla will witness the highest increase, with PG seats rising from 139 to 230. Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda is proposed to see its intake increase from 99 to 156, while Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College, Mandi will have its PG seats expanded from 24 to 79.<\/p>\n

Similarly, Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar Government Medical College, Nahan is set to increase its seats from 3 to 35, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru Government Medical College, Chamba from 4 to 32, and Dr. Radhakrishnan Government Medical College, Hamirpur from 8 to 65.<\/p>\n

Officials said the proposed expansion would not only strengthen postgraduate medical education but also improve patient care in government hospitals, as postgraduate students play a crucial role in clinical services while undergoing specialist training.<\/p>\n

218 Senior Resident, Tutor Specialist Posts Created<\/h4>\n

To support the proposed increase in PG seats, the state government has created 218 posts of Senior Residents and Tutor Specialists in government medical colleges during the past three years.<\/p>\n

Among these, 63 posts have been created at Dr. Radhakrishnan Government Medical College, Hamirpur, 54 at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda, 36 at Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Government Medical College, Mandi, 32 at Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru Government Medical College, Chamba, 31 at Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar Government Medical College, Nahan, and two at the Atal Institute of Medical Super Speciality, Chamiyana.<\/p>\n

The creation of these posts is expected to strengthen specialist healthcare services, enhance clinical training, improve postgraduate teaching, and ensure better patient care across the state.<\/p>\n

Focus on Building a Skilled Medical Workforce<\/h4>\n

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the expansion of postgraduate medical education is a key component of the government’s vision to strengthen the healthcare sector and address the growing demand for specialist doctors.<\/p>\n

He said Senior Residents form the backbone of tertiary healthcare institutions by playing a vital role in patient care, medical education, research, and clinical training. They also act as an important link between faculty members and undergraduate students while ensuring the smooth functioning of specialized hospital departments.<\/p>\n

The Chief Minister said that increasing PG seats would help develop a highly skilled medical workforce capable of meeting the healthcare needs of the state while improving the overall quality of medical education.<\/p>\n

Upgrading Medical Colleges<\/h4>\n

Sukhu said the government is continuously upgrading government medical colleges with modern infrastructure, advanced diagnostic facilities, state-of-the-art laboratories, and improved teaching resources to create an environment conducive to quality medical education and healthcare delivery.<\/p>\n

He added that strengthening medical education and expanding specialist training capacity remain among the government’s top priorities. These measures, he said, would not only improve healthcare outcomes but also reduce the need for patients to travel outside Himachal Pradesh for specialized treatment.<\/p>\n
