President of India Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday unveiled a bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the Museum of the City of Skopje in North Macedonia, describing the Father of the Nation’s ideals of truth, non-violence and peaceful coexistence as more relevant than ever in a world grappling with conflict, intolerance and division.<\/p>\n

The unveiling ceremony was held jointly with President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova of North Macedonia during President Murmu’s official visit to the Balkan nation, marking another milestone in the growing friendship between the two countries.<\/p>\n

Addressing the gathering after the unveiling, President Murmu said that although Mahatma Gandhi belonged to India, his message transcended national boundaries and continues to inspire humanity across the world.<\/p>\n

“At a time when the world faces conflict, intolerance and division, Gandhiji’s faith in dialogue, compassion and peaceful coexistence remains profoundly relevant,” she said.<\/p>\n

The President emphasized that Gandhi’s life demonstrated how truth and non-violence are not signs of weakness but powerful tools for achieving justice, dignity and freedom. She noted that his ideals continue to encourage people to reject hatred, resolve differences peacefully and serve society with courage, empathy and compassion.<\/p>\n

Calling the newly unveiled bust a symbol of shared values, President Murmu said it would stand as a lasting reminder of the friendship between India and North Macedonia and their common commitment to peace, tolerance and humanity.<\/p>\n

“The bust of Mahatma Gandhi will remain a symbol of the enduring friendship between our two nations and our shared dedication to the ideals of peace and human dignity,” she said.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Mayor of Skopje Orce Gjorgjievski, Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya, and Members of Parliament Dr. Dinesh Sharma and Vijay Baghel, who are accompanying the President on her official visit.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the day, President Murmu and President Siljanovska-Davkova visited the Memorial of Mother Teresa in Skopje. Mother Teresa was born in the city and lived there until 1928 before joining the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland and later moving to India, where she devoted her life to humanitarian service. She was awarded India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1980 in recognition of her exceptional service to humanity.<\/p>\n

President Murmu’s visit to North Macedonia forms part of her three-nation diplomatic tour aimed at strengthening India’s engagement with Europe and enhancing bilateral cooperation. Her engagements in Skopje highlighted the shared commitment of both countries to cultural ties, humanitarian values and global peace.<\/p>\n

The President is scheduled to depart for Bucharest, Romania, on July 23, which will be the final destination of her three-nation visit.<\/p>\n
