As the nation prepares to commemorate the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas, the memories of the historic 1999 Kargil War continue to inspire generations. Among the brave veterans who served with distinction during Operation Vijay is Honorary Captain Sham Lal Sharma, a native of Dhamoon village under Panesh Post Office in Shimla district, whose extraordinary service during the war remains a source of pride for the region and the nation.<\/p>\n

Born and raised in the picturesque village of Dhamoon, Captain Sharma joined the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (JAK Rifles) in 1973 at the age of 19 after completing his Intermediate education. Recruited through the Recruiting Zone Shimla, he underwent rigorous military training and spent over two decades sharpening his professional skills before being deployed to the Kargil sector during the 1999 conflict.<\/p>\n

The Kargil War, fought from May to July 1999, remains one of the fiercest battles in India’s military history. Indian soldiers fought under extremely harsh conditions, battling enemy forces amidst rocky terrain, steep mountains, relentless shelling and freezing temperatures that plunged to minus 20 degrees Celsius.<\/p>\n

Captain Sharma’s battalion, 14 JAK Rifles, operating under the 121 Infantry Brigade of the 3 Infantry Division, was deployed in the strategically crucial Drass Sector of the Kargil Valley. Pakistani soldiers and infiltrators had illegally occupied Indian positions after crossing the Line of Control in violation of established agreements. The Indian Army launched Operation Vijay to recapture these posts, ultimately forcing the intruders to retreat and restoring control over the occupied territory.<\/p>\n

Recalling those unforgettable days, Captain Sharma said that the thunderous firing of the Bofors guns shook the mountains, while enemy shelling lit up the night sky like daylight. Even after nearly three decades, the memories of those intense battles continue to give him goosebumps.<\/p>\n

Serving as the Subedar Major during the conflict, Captain Sharma not only carried out his military responsibilities with exceptional dedication but also played a crucial role in sustaining frontline operations. He ensured the timely delivery of rations, weapons, ammunition, clothing, medicines and mail to soldiers stationed at some of the most inhospitable and strategically vital high-altitude posts. His meticulous planning and tireless efforts kept troop morale high and ensured that every soldier had the essential supplies needed to continue fighting under extremely challenging conditions.<\/p>\n

His selfless service, exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment during Operation Vijay significantly contributed to the success of military operations in the sector. In recognition of his distinguished and outstanding service to the nation, he was later conferred the Honorary Commissioned Rank of Captain before his retirement from the Indian Army.<\/p>\n

Even after retirement, Captain Sharma has remained actively associated with the welfare of ex-servicemen and veterans, dedicating his time voluntarily to various welfare initiatives aimed at supporting the armed forces community.<\/p>\n

On the eve of the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas, Captain Sharma paid heartfelt tribute to the brave martyrs who laid down their lives in defence of the nation. He appealed to every Indian to always remember the supreme sacrifice of the fallen heroes and to preserve the legacy of the Kargil War for future generations.<\/p>\n

“The courage, sacrifice and patriotism displayed by our soldiers during the Kargil War should never be forgotten. Every Indian must remember the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty,” Captain Sharma said.<\/p>\n
