Vallabh Government College, Mandi has added another glorious chapter to its history as two cadets of its NCC Air Wing\u2014Cadet Sergeant Muskan Thakur and Cadet Corporal Hansraj Thakur\u2014achieved remarkable success in the prestigious NCC All India Mountaineering Expedition\u20132026. Displaying exceptional courage, endurance, discipline and determination during the expedition to Mount Deo Tibba (6,001 metres), the two cadets successfully scaled Mount Jagatsukh (5,134 metres) in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas, bringing laurels to Vallabh Government College, Mandi, Himachal Pradesh Air Squadron NCC Kullu, and the entire state of Himachal Pradesh at the national level.<\/p>\n

Upon their return to the college, Cadet Sergeant Muskan Thakur and Cadet Corporal Hansraj Thakur received a grand and enthusiastic welcome from the college faculty, students and NCC cadets. The college administration also organised a High Tea in their honour to celebrate this historic achievement.<\/p>\n

Congratulating the cadets, Principal Dr. Sanjeev Kumar stated that the NCC cadets of the college have consistently brought distinction to the institution at both national and international levels. He highlighted that under the able guidance of Associate NCC Officer and Flight Commander Flying Officer Dr. Chaman, more than 14 NCC cadets and students have received Presidential Commissions in the Indian Armed Forces and are now serving as Flying Officers and Lieutenants. He further noted that the college’s NCC cadets have represented India in prestigious Youth Exchange Programmes in Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Russia, and the India\u2013Bhutan Youth Exchange Camp. Between 2018 and 2026, more than a dozen cadets from the college have also participated in the prestigious Republic Day Camp (RDC) in New Delhi.<\/p>\n

Expressing immense pride over this landmark accomplishment, Flying Officer Dr. Chaman, Flight Commander of the NCC Air Wing, Mandi, said that this success is not merely a personal achievement of the two cadets but a matter of pride for the entire college, the National Cadet Corps and the state of Himachal Pradesh.<\/p>\n

He further informed that, in recognition of their outstanding performance, discipline, courage and dedication, both cadets were honoured with Certificates of Appreciation and Mementoes by the Director General of the National Cadet Corps, Lieutenant General Virendra Vats, YSM, SM, VSM. The honour represents national recognition of their exemplary achievement.<\/p>\n

Flying Officer Dr. Chaman stated that only 24 outstanding NCC cadets from different States and Union Territories of India were selected for the NCC All India Mountaineering Expedition\u20132026 after a rigorous selection process involving physical fitness tests and multiple competitive evaluation stages.<\/p>\n

The expedition was successfully led by Wing Commander Kunal Sharma, Commanding Officer of Himachal Pradesh Air Squadron NCC, Kullu. Under his dynamic leadership, along with the dedicated efforts of the instructor team and the discipline and teamwork demonstrated by all participants, the expedition achieved 100 percent success.<\/p>\n

The National Mountaineering Expedition was conducted from May 30 to June 23, 2026, in the picturesque Pir Panjal Range of Himachal Pradesh. The primary objective of the expedition was to develop mountaineering skills, leadership qualities, discipline, self-confidence, teamwork, courage, patience, decision-making abilities under extreme conditions, and a strong spirit of national service among NCC cadets.<\/p>\n

The expedition was ceremonially flagged off in Shimla by the Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Kavinder Gupta, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and extended his best wishes and blessings to the expedition team for a successful mission.<\/p>\n

During the initial phase, the participants visited the Mountaineering Museum, Manali, where they gained valuable insights into the history of Indian mountaineering and notable Himalayan expeditions. They also underwent intensive practical training in rucksack packing, tent pitching, safe handling of mountaineering equipment and efficient management of shared expedition resources.<\/p>\n

The expedition team gradually gained altitude by trekking from Manali to Chika, Seri and the Base Camp, while following a carefully planned acclimatisation schedule suitable for high-altitude conditions. During this period, the cadets received advanced training in snowcraft techniques, including safe ascent and descent on snow, self-arrest techniques, cramponing, fixed rope movement, team arrest and safe glacier travel.<\/p>\n

Persistent adverse weather conditions from June 12 to June 17, 2026, prevented the team from attempting the originally planned summit. After a careful assessment of the prevailing conditions, Expedition Leader Wing Commander Kunal Sharma, in consultation with the instructor team, decided to undertake an alternative summit of Mount Jagatsukh (5,134 metres).<\/p>\n

The final summit attempt commenced at 4:00 a.m. on June 18, 2026. Negotiating steep, snow-covered and technically demanding terrain, the expedition team successfully reached the summit of Mount Jagatsukh at approximately 8:30 a.m., where they proudly unfurled the National Flag of India and the NCC Flag. This became one of the most memorable and inspiring moments in the history of the expedition.<\/p>\n

The expedition’s greatest achievement was its 100 percent summit success. Every member of the team\u2014including 24 cadets, 4 officers, 7 instructors, PI Staff and GCI Staff\u2014successfully reached the summit, adding another glorious chapter to the proud legacy of the National Cadet Corps.<\/p>\n

Due to continued adverse weather, the expedition was formally concluded on June 22, 2026. During the closing ceremony held on June 23, all participants were honoured with certificates and mementoes in recognition of their outstanding achievements.<\/p>\n

Following the successful expedition, both cadets actively participated in the Annual Training Camp (ATC) held at Hamirpur in July 2026, continuing their commitment to NCC activities.<\/p>\n

Flying Officer Dr. Chaman emphasised that the National Cadet Corps is not merely an organisation for military training but a powerful institution for personality development, leadership, character building and national service. He expressed confidence that the remarkable achievements of Cadet Sergeant Muskan Thakur and Cadet Corporal Hansraj Thakur would inspire other students of the college to pursue excellence, participate in adventure activities and dedicate themselves to the service of the nation.<\/p>\n

The NCC All India Mountaineering Expedition\u20132026 has once again demonstrated that unwavering determination, rigorous training, discipline, effective leadership and an unbreakable team spirit can transform even the toughest Himalayan challenges into remarkable success. The historic accomplishment of these two talented cadets from Vallabh Government College, Mandi, will remain an enduring source of inspiration for generations to come.<\/p>\n

On this proud occasion, Principal Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, Senior Staff Council Secretary Prof. Baldev Verma, Staff Council Secretary Prof. Ratna Thakur, Flying Officer Dr. Chaman, Lieutenant Balbir Singh, Caretaker Officer Dr. Kavita, and Dr. Banita Saklani, State President of the Himachal Pradesh Government College Teachers’ Association, extended their heartfelt congratulations to both cadets.
