Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday chaired a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Defence, with discussions centred on strengthening the Territorial Army and enhancing its operational effectiveness.<\/p>\n

The meeting, held in New Delhi, featured a detailed presentation by senior Ministry of Defence officials on the Territorial Army\u2019s mandate, operational role and key achievements. Members of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee also shared suggestions aimed at further strengthening the force and improving its overall capabilities.<\/p>\n

Addressing the committee, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the Territorial Army as a vital contributor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’, stating that its role extends beyond national security to environmental conservation, disaster response and social service.<\/p>\n

Calling the Territorial Army a “living embodiment of the Citizen-Soldier concept”, the Defence Minister said its personnel successfully balance civilian professions with military responsibilities.<\/p>\n

“While its members engage in civilian pursuits, they simultaneously don the uniform to safeguard the borders and maintain internal security,” he said.<\/p>\n

The Defence Minister highlighted that the Territorial Army plays a crucial role in creating surge capacity for the armed forces by maintaining a reserve of trained personnel who can be mobilised whenever required. He noted that after completing their military tenure, these personnel return to civilian life and serve as a strong link between society and the armed forces, inspiring young people to join the defence services.<\/p>\n

The Territorial Army currently comprises around 44,400 personnel organised into 59 diverse units, making it a trained, motivated and capable reserve force.<\/p>\n

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also praised the force for its swift response during natural disasters, describing Territorial Army personnel as the country’s first responders during emergencies. He acknowledged their contribution in relief and rescue operations, including providing medical assistance during the Kerala floods, Odisha cyclone and the recent floods in Assam.<\/p>\n

Highlighting the force’s role in environmental conservation, the Defence Minister said the Ecological Task Forces of the Territorial Army have planted nearly 10 crore saplings across the country, with an impressive survival rate of 80 to 85 per cent.<\/p>\n

He said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability and contributes significantly towards achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Mission LiFE’ and ‘Panchamrit’ goals on climate action.<\/p>\n

The Defence Minister also appreciated the efforts of Territorial Army personnel deployed in Jammu and Kashmir for expanding the reach of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign and strengthening public participation in the national movement.<\/p>\n

The meeting was attended by Defence Minister of State Sanjay Seth, Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani, Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary (Defence Production) Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary (Defence Finance) Vishvajit Sahay and other senior officials of the Ministry of Defence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
