AAIB Launches Probe Into Air India Phuket\u2013Delhi Flight After Sudden 300-Foot Altitude Variation.<\/h1>\n

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has initiated a detailed investigation into an incident involving Air India flight AI 2379, which was operating from Phuket to Delhi on August 4, 2026, after the aircraft experienced a sudden altitude variation of approximately 300 feet during cruise.<\/p>\n

The incident involved an Air India Airbus A320 aircraft bearing registration VT-EXO. According to information released by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) on Tuesday, the aircraft subsequently stabilised and completed its journey, landing safely at Delhi.<\/p>\n

24 Passengers and Crew Reported Injured<\/h4>\n

The aircraft was carrying 137 passengers, including three infants, and eight crew members comprising two pilots and six cabin crew.<\/p>\n

During the occurrence, 20 passengers and four cabin crew members reported injuries. The authorities have not, at this stage, attributed the injuries or the sudden altitude variation to any specific cause.<\/p>\n

The incident was reported to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), following which the AAIB took up the investigation in accordance with the applicable provisions and international aviation safety protocols established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).<\/p>\n

International Technical Assistance<\/h4>\n

The AAIB has made the requisite notifications to ICAO and the concerned States as part of the investigation process.<\/p>\n

As prescribed under the international aircraft accident and incident investigation framework, the State of Design and State of Manufacture can participate in investigations involving aircraft manufactured or designed in their jurisdictions.<\/p>\n

Accordingly, France’s Bureau d\u2019Enqu\u00eates et d\u2019Analyses pour la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 de l\u2019aviation civile (BEA), the relevant French investigation authority, is providing technical assistance to the AAIB. Technical representatives from Airbus, the aircraft manufacturer, are also assisting the investigation by providing relevant technical information and design documentation.<\/p>\n

The participation of these international authorities and technical experts is part of the established ICAO framework and does not, by itself, indicate any particular cause or fault associated with the aircraft or its manufacturer.<\/p>\n

Flight Data, Aircraft Systems and Human Factors Under Examination<\/h4>\n

The AAIB said its investigation is currently focused on the systematic collection, preservation and examination of all relevant evidence.<\/p>\n

Investigators are examining multiple aspects of the occurrence, including:<\/p>\n

– The aircraft and its systems
\n– Recorded flight data
\n– Operational records
\n– Aircraft maintenance records
\n– Relevant medical information
\n– Human factors
\n– Interviews with passengers, crew and other persons concerned
\n– Other technical and operational evidence connected with the flight<\/p>\n

The Bureau stressed that all available material evidence will be assessed in its entirety before investigators reach any conclusions.<\/p>\n

AAIB Warns Against Premature Conclusions<\/h4>\n

The investigation agency has emphasised that the sole objective of the probe is to establish the circumstances and contributing factors surrounding the occurrence and identify appropriate safety measures to prevent a recurrence.<\/p>\n

The AAIB said the investigation is being conducted independently and on the basis of evidence. It cautioned against drawing conclusions from individual pieces of information while the investigation remains underway.<\/p>\n

The Bureau also said that certain records, statements, medical information and other material gathered during the investigation are protected and confidential under the applicable investigation framework.<\/p>\n

According to the AAIB, maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of the investigative process is essential to ensuring a fair, objective and technically sound determination of the facts.<\/p>\n

The agency has therefore appealed to the media, passengers, aviation observers and the general public to respect the investigation process and refrain from drawing conclusions based on incomplete, unverified or selectively available information.<\/p>\n

Preliminary Findings Expected Within Stipulated Timeframe<\/h4>\n

The AAIB said it will conduct a comprehensive examination of all material facts and relevant evidence connected with the incident. It will issue its preliminary findings within the stipulated timeframe, in accordance with applicable provisions and ICAO protocols.<\/p>\n

Further information will be released publicly at the appropriate stage of the investigation, the Bureau said.<\/p>\n

The investigation remains ongoing, and no cause for the sudden altitude variation has been established at this stage. The AAIB reiterated that its overriding objective is aviation safety and that the investigation will remain independent, transparent and professional.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
