National Seminar at IIT Madras Explores Digital Commerce Pathways for MSMEs to Go Global.<\/h1>\n

The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), through the MSME Development & Facilitation Office (MSME DFO), Chennai, organised a National Seminar on \u201cFrom Local to Global: Enabling Export-Ready MSMEs through Digital Commerce\u201d at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) on August 18. The programme was organised in collaboration with the Entrepreneurship Cell of IIT Madras with the objective of helping micro, small and medium enterprises understand the opportunities offered by digital commerce, international trade and technology-enabled market access.<\/p>\n

The seminar brought together MSMEs, entrepreneurs, students, policymakers, financial institutions, export ecosystem stakeholders and digital commerce experts. The event provided a platform for participants to gain practical knowledge on how Indian enterprises can expand beyond domestic markets and establish a stronger presence in national and international markets.<\/p>\n

Focus on Digital Commerce and Global Market Access<\/h4>\n

Addressing the inaugural session, Praveen Yadav, Additional Chief Secretary, MSME Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, highlighted the transformative role of digital commerce in expanding the reach of MSMEs. He noted that digital platforms are helping businesses overcome geographical barriers and access customers in markets far beyond their traditional areas of operation.<\/p>\n

He also emphasised the need for stronger Centre-State convergence to build an enabling ecosystem that can improve the global competitiveness of Indian MSMEs and support their transition from local markets to international business opportunities.<\/p>\n

Prof. Manu Santhanam, Dean, IC&SR, IIT Madras, in his special address, underlined the importance of innovation and stronger collaboration between academia and industry. He highlighted the role of research, new technologies and product innovation in helping MSMEs develop competitive products and improve their position in both domestic and international markets.<\/p>\n

Hansraj Verma, Director General, Council of State Industrial Development & Investment Corporation of India, also addressed the gathering and stressed that quality remains fundamental to strengthening the competitiveness of enterprises. He highlighted the importance of digitisation in enabling MSMEs to expand their market reach and respond to emerging business opportunities.<\/p>\n

Practical Guidance on Exports and Digital Trade<\/h4>\n

Dhayalan, Director & Head, MSME DFO Chennai, delivered the keynote address and felicitated the distinguished guests. Reshma Rajeevan, Deputy Director, MSME DFO Chennai, delivered the welcome address and set the context for the programme, emphasising the need for effective support mechanisms to help MSMEs move from domestic markets towards global opportunities.<\/p>\n

The technical sessions brought together experts and officials from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), EXIM Bank, ECGC, IIT Madras, and professionals from export and e-commerce consulting sectors.<\/p>\n

The sessions addressed several practical aspects of international trade and digital commerce, including:<\/p>\n

– Export procedures and regulatory requirements
\n– Export finance and international trade finance
\n– Export risk mitigation and insurance
\n– Identification of suitable international markets
\n– International payment mechanisms
\n– Compliance requirements for exporters
\n– Digital onboarding and adoption of digital platforms
\n– E-commerce opportunities for MSMEs
\n– Technology and innovation for improving competitiveness
\n– Strategies for accessing customers in overseas markets<\/p>\n

The discussions were designed to provide MSMEs with actionable information on the steps involved in becoming export-ready and using digital commerce as a tool for market expansion.<\/p>\n

Procurement and Marketing Support Scheme<\/h4>\n

The seminar was also aligned with the Government’s continuing efforts to strengthen market access for MSMEs. The Procurement & Marketing Support (PMS) Scheme of the Ministry of MSME includes national workshops and seminars as part of its capacity-building interventions.<\/p>\n

These programmes are aimed at creating awareness among MSMEs about market access, packaging, import-export procedures, e-commerce platforms and other developments that can help enterprises expand their customer base.<\/p>\n

The Chennai seminar was organised under this component, providing participating MSMEs with direct access to officials, financial institutions, export experts and digital commerce professionals. Such interactions are intended to help entrepreneurs better understand the opportunities and challenges associated with entering national and international markets.<\/p>\n

Opportunities for Students and Aspiring Entrepreneurs<\/h4>\n

The programme also provided an opportunity for students and aspiring entrepreneurs at IIT Madras to gain insights into the rapidly evolving fields of digital commerce, entrepreneurship and international business.<\/p>\n

The participation of academia, entrepreneurs, government officials and industry experts created a platform for knowledge sharing and highlighted the potential of technology-driven commerce to connect Indian businesses with customers across the world.<\/p>\n

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks acknowledging the contribution of the distinguished guests, speakers, panellists, experts, participating MSMEs, students, partner institutions and the organising team.<\/p>\n

The initiative reflects the Ministry of MSME’s continued efforts to strengthen market access, digital adoption, export preparedness and handholding support for Indian MSMEs.
