Former West Bengal Chief Minister and All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee has accused Suvendu Adhikari, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, of issuing a public threat against her, alleging that she was told steps would be taken to prevent her from leaving her residence.<\/p>\n

In a strongly worded statement, Banerjee questioned the implications of the alleged remark and appealed to the President of India, the Chief Justice of India and the people of the country to consider whether such conduct is consistent with the constitutional values of India.<\/p>\n

Banerjee alleged that the statement was made by Adhikari while he was seated in a government office and described the incident as a \u201cnew low\u201d in Indian politics. She claimed that the words used were unambiguous and amounted to a declaration that she would not be allowed to leave her home.<\/p>\n

Questions constitutional authority<\/h4>\n

Reacting to the alleged threat, Banerjee questioned whether it amounted to house arrest, intimidation or political persecution. She also asked who has the authority to restrict the movement of a political leader in a constitutional democracy.<\/p>\n

Banerjee framed the issue as extending beyond her personally, arguing that it concerns the broader question of political freedom, dissent and constitutional rights in India.<\/p>\n

She alleged that the incident reflected an increasingly authoritarian political environment in which opponents could be threatened and dissent discouraged. Banerjee further criticised what she described as the BJP\u2019s approach towards political opponents and warned against the erosion of democratic freedoms.<\/p>\n

Appeal to constitutional institutions<\/h4>\n

In her statement, Banerjee directly appealed to the country’s constitutional institutions and citizens, asking whether the alleged conduct represented the India envisioned by the Constitution.<\/p>\n

She emphasised that political disagreement should not result in restrictions on an individual’s fundamental freedoms and portrayed the alleged threat as a matter of wider democratic significance.<\/p>\n

Banerjee also rejected any suggestion that she would be intimidated into submission, stating that the alleged attempt to pressure her represented a serious misreading of her political position.<\/p>\n

\u201cBigger than Mamata Banerjee\u201d<\/h4>\n

Calling the matter \u201cbigger than Mamata Banerjee,\u201d the former Chief Minister said the controversy was about the kind of political system the country should have.<\/p>\n

She alleged that political opponents were being threatened, dissent was being punished and constitutional rights were increasingly being treated as privileges controlled by those in power.<\/p>\n

Banerjee described the current situation as a \u201cdangerous authoritarian moment\u201d and argued that political power and intimidation could not permanently suppress public opinion.<\/p>\n
