The Government e-Marketplace (GeM), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and the Textiles Committee (TC), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote recycled and upcycled textile products through public procurement.<\/p>\n

The partnership aims to create new market opportunities for enterprises working in the circular textile economy by encouraging the use of products made from pre- and post-consumer textile waste, scrap and second-hand clothes. The MoU was signed during the 62nd Foundation Day celebrations of the Textiles Committee in Mumbai.<\/p>\n

The initiative will establish a \u201cWaste-to-Value-to-Market\u201d ecosystem, under which textile waste will be converted into quality, value-added products and subsequently made available to government buyers through the GeM platform.<\/p>\n

Under the agreement, the Textiles Committee will identify, verify, certify and recognise eligible producers of recycled and upcycled textile products. It will also support stakeholder consultations, capacity building, market research and the development of technical specifications required for government procurement.<\/p>\n

GeM, meanwhile, will create dedicated categories for recycled and upcycled textile products and facilitate the onboarding of sellers and their access to online markets. The platform will also promote these products among government buyers. Training and handholding support will be provided to recyclers and last-mile upcyclers to help them participate effectively in public procurement.<\/p>\n

The partnership will adopt a hub-and-spoke model, with the Textiles Committee and its affiliated offices undertaking outreach, mobilisation and capacity-building activities for recyclers and upcyclers. The initiative will also support the preparation of suitable product specifications and catalogues for government purchasing.<\/p>\n

The programme places particular emphasis on women, MSMEs, local enterprises, artisans, recyclers and other circular-economy businesses. It is aimed at creating an inclusive, decentralised and sustainable production ecosystem aligned with the national priorities of Vocal for Local, Make in India and AatmaNirbhar Bharat.<\/p>\n

Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh and Maharashtra Minister of Textiles Sanjay Savkare attended the event. The MoU was signed by GeM Additional CEO Ajit B. Chavan and Textiles Committee Secretary Kartikay Dhanda in the presence of senior officials and industry representatives.<\/p>\n

GeM CEO Mihir Kumar said the partnership would connect certification, standardisation and market access, creating reliable demand for products manufactured from textile waste. He said the scale of government procurement could accelerate the adoption of such products across offices, institutions, gifting and other public-use requirements.<\/p>\n

The initiative is expected to support resource conservation, sustainable livelihoods and responsible consumption while advancing India\u2019s transition towards a circular and resource-efficient textile economy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
