First Lady Melania Trump returned to western North Carolina to visit Mountain View Elementary School in Ashe County, nearly two years after Hurricane Helene devastated communities across the region.<\/p>\n

The visit focused on the area’s recovery from the 2024 hurricane and the community’s efforts to look toward the future, particularly through education and artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrue resilience means having the courage to look ahead and move society forward, creating a better future,\u201d Melania Trump said during her visit.<\/p>\n

Hurricane Helene brought record-breaking rainfall to North Carolina in 2024, causing widespread flooding and damage to roads, bridges and essential services. According to the First Lady’s office, more than one million people lost power and 108 lives were lost in the state.<\/p>\n

Mountain View Elementary became a distribution centre following the disaster, providing food, water, supplies, counselling and other assistance to affected families.<\/p>\n

The First Lady highlighted the efforts of school staff and community members during the crisis, including Assistant Principal Cynthia Harless, who remained at the school and volunteered at its distribution centre for four weeks after floodwaters prevented her and her family from returning home.<\/p>\n

From Hurricane Recovery to Artificial Intelligence<\/h4>\n

Melania Trump also highlighted North Carolina’s growing participation in artificial intelligence education through the Presidential AI Challenge, described by her office as the most expansive federally led AI competition in the United States.<\/p>\n

More than 20,000 participants from all 50 states took part in the challenge. Among the 2026 national champions was Carrie Robledo, a second-grade teacher from Star Elementary School in North Carolina.<\/p>\n

Robledo developed an initiative called \u201cAI Insect Detectives,\u201d introducing young students to artificial intelligence through science, curiosity and the natural environment. She travelled to Mountain View Elementary to meet the First Lady and students.<\/p>\n

Melania Trump used Robledo’s work to emphasise the role of education in helping communities move forward after disasters.<\/p>\n

\u201cMs. Robledo built something that no hurricane can destroy and no flood can wash away: knowledge,\u201d the First Lady said.<\/p>\n

AI Learning Resources Presented to Students<\/h4>\n

During the visit, the First Lady announced new educational resources for students in Ashe County.<\/p>\n

BE BEST Fostering the Future, NVIDIA and StudyFetch have provided 1,500 students with AI literacy training licenses. In addition, 100 Jetson Nano Developer Kits are being provided to Mountain View Elementary and other schools in the district.<\/p>\n

The resources are intended to give students opportunities to explore artificial intelligence and physical AI, develop technical skills and work on creative projects.<\/p>\n

Melania Trump encouraged students to remain curious, take their education seriously and use the new technology to develop innovative ideas.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on Ashe County’s recovery, she said the community had demonstrated that resilience could emerge from difficult circumstances and that the storm would not define its future.<\/p>\n

The First Lady also planned to visit classrooms during her time at Mountain View Elementary and encouraged students to dream big, including challenging them to create new technologies and potentially bring their inventions to the White House.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
