India-Nepal Trade Committee Reviews Market Access, Customs and Border Connectivity.<\/h1>\n

The India-Nepal Inter-Governmental Sub-Committee (IGSC) on Trade, Transit and Cooperation to Control Unauthorised Trade held its meeting at Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi, on September 16 and 17, reviewing a wide range of issues aimed at facilitating bilateral trade, strengthening transit connectivity and addressing unauthorised cross-border trade.<\/p>\n

The Indian delegation was led by Ujjwal Kumar Ghosh, Joint Secretary, Department of Commerce, while the Nepali delegation was headed by Buddha Bahadur Gurung, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Government of Nepal. Senior officials from various ministries and departments of both countries participated in the discussions.<\/p>\n

The IGSC serves as an important bilateral mechanism for examining trade and trade-related matters and facilitating commerce and transit between India and Nepal.<\/p>\n

During the two-day meeting, both sides discussed market access, customs procedures, trade facilitation, product standards, food safety, phytosanitary requirements, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and AYUSH products. Agricultural, dairy and food products were also among the sectors reviewed.<\/p>\n

The two countries discussed measures to improve customs cooperation through pre-arrival information exchange, electronic verification of Certificates of Origin, customs automation and digitalisation. The discussions sought to facilitate legitimate trade while ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and preventing misuse of preferential trade arrangements.<\/p>\n

Transit and connectivity remained a key focus, with officials reviewing rail and road links, freight movement, Integrated Check Posts and land-port infrastructure. Both sides discussed better utilisation of existing facilities and measures to address operational bottlenecks affecting bilateral and transit trade.<\/p>\n

India and Nepal also welcomed continued institutional cooperation in standards, food safety, plant quarantine and conformity assessment, including capacity-building initiatives.<\/p>\n

Both sides stressed the need for closer coordination among relevant agencies to facilitate legitimate cross-border commerce and tackle unauthorised trade and commercial fraud.<\/p>\n

The meeting concluded in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, with both sides agreeing to maintain regular engagement and pursue time-bound follow-up on issues requiring further technical examination.<\/p>\n

India and Nepal share close historical, cultural and economic ties, with India being Nepal\u2019s largest trading partner and an important source of investment. The latest discussions are expected to contribute to stronger bilateral trade, smoother transit connectivity and deeper economic cooperation between the two countries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
