President Droupadi Murmu Calls for People-Centric Climate Adaptation Rooted in Traditional Knowledge.<\/h1>\n

President of India Droupadi Murmu on Sunday called for strengthening climate resilience through people-centric and community-based adaptation approaches rooted in traditional knowledge and the lived experiences of local communities.<\/p>\n

The President was speaking at the valedictory session of the International Conference on \u2018The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics\u2019, organised by the National Green Tribunal in New Delhi.<\/p>\n

Addressing the gathering, President Murmu said climate change is creating imbalances across multiple levels of human existence, with biodiversity loss, water stress and land degradation closely interconnected with the changing climate. She noted that the consequences are also being felt in food security, health and livelihoods.<\/p>\n

Focus on vulnerable communities<\/h4>\n

President Murmu emphasised the need for a well-structured framework of policies and actions to tackle the complex challenges posed by climate change. She said such a framework should involve not only governments and legal experts but also communities that are directly affected by climate-related changes.<\/p>\n

She stressed the importance of being particularly sensitive to the needs of rural and forest-dwelling communities, small farmers, women and other vulnerable sections of society, which often bear the greatest impact of natural disasters.<\/p>\n

Traditional knowledge key to climate resilience<\/h4>\n

The President highlighted the role of traditional knowledge systems, local practices and community experiences in strengthening climate adaptation capacity. She called for climate-resilience strategies that are people-centric and community-based, while drawing upon traditional knowledge.<\/p>\n

She also underlined the importance of sustainable afforestation in enhancing climate resilience. According to her, afforestation initiatives should nurture biodiversity and be suited to local conditions.<\/p>\n

The President said the objective of sustainable afforestation should go beyond simply planting trees and should instead focus on restoring healthy, self-sustaining ecosystems.<\/p>\n

Balancing climate action and development<\/h4>\n

President Murmu said developing countries need to pursue a path that strengthens resilience while maintaining the pace of development. She emphasised that commitments to responsible climate action should be aligned with a country’s development needs and economic aspirations, while also being technically feasible.<\/p>\n

She noted that several of these issues had been discussed during the conference.<\/p>\n

Public participation in environmental protection<\/h4>\n

The President also highlighted India’s efforts to promote environmental awareness by involving citizens, particularly young people. She said the Government of India’s Mission LiFE initiative has demonstrated how public participation and community ownership can contribute to ecological restoration.<\/p>\n

President Murmu appreciated the National Green Tribunal for bringing together experts, judges, jurists and key stakeholders from different countries involved in environmental issues on a common platform.<\/p>\n

She expressed confidence that the deliberations and action plans emerging from the conference would help pave the way for climate-resilient societies based on inclusive policies and effective action.<\/p>\n
