The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III (GEC-III) scheme aimed at strengthening India\u2019s intra-state transmission system and facilitating the integration and evacuation of large-scale renewable energy across States and Union Territories.<\/p>\n

The scheme will enable the evacuation of up to 135 GW of renewable energy and is targeted for completion by Financial Year 2032-33. The initiative is expected to play an important role in strengthening the country\u2019s power transmission infrastructure as renewable energy capacity continues to expand.<\/p>\n

A major component of GEC-III is the deployment of 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). These storage systems will be installed at renewable energy developer or generator locations, or at other strategically important locations to provide greater flexibility to the power grid.<\/p>\n

According to the government, the battery storage component will help address challenges associated with the intermittent nature of renewable energy, transmission congestion, peak-hour curtailment and demand during non-solar hours. It will also support smoother integration of renewable power into the electricity grid and facilitate its evacuation within States and Union Territories.<\/p>\n

The total project outlay for the scheme has been estimated at Rs 1,86,405 crore. Of this, Rs 1,36,378 crore will be allocated for the development of intra-state transmission systems under GEC-III, while Rs 50,000 crore will be allocated for the deployment of 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems.<\/p>\n

The scheme includes Central Financial Support of Rs 54,082 crore. The Central Financial Assistance is intended to offset intra-state transmission charges, which in turn is expected to help keep electricity costs lower for consumers.<\/p>\n

Under the implementation framework, all greenfield projects under the intra-state transmission component will be developed through Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB). Brownfield upgradation and network-strengthening works will be undertaken on a Cost Plus Basis (CPB).<\/p>\n

The State Transmission Utilities (STUs) will serve as the overall implementing agencies. Transmission Service Providers participating through the competitive bidding process will undertake projects under a Build-Own-Operate-Maintain (BOOM) model.<\/p>\n

The government said the GEC-III scheme will contribute towards achieving the national target of 900 GW of installed non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2035. Strengthening the transmission network is expected to facilitate the movement of renewable electricity from generation centres to consumption areas and improve the overall flexibility of the power system.<\/p>\n

The scheme is also expected to contribute to the country’s long-term energy security and promote environmentally sustainable economic growth by helping reduce the carbon footprint associated with electricity generation.<\/p>\n

In addition to strengthening power infrastructure, GEC-III is expected to create significant direct and indirect employment opportunities in the power, manufacturing and construction sectors. The deployment and manufacturing of Battery Energy Storage Systems is expected to further support employment in the domestic energy-storage industry.<\/p>\n

The initiative will also create long-term skilled employment opportunities in areas such as operation and maintenance, power-system management and grid management across the participating States and Union Territories.<\/p>\n

With its focus on renewable energy evacuation, grid strengthening and large-scale battery storage, the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III is set to form a major part of India’s transmission infrastructure expansion to support the country’s growing non-fossil energy capacity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
