Government Announces New Discovery Track Under PRIP Scheme With Financial Assistance Up to Rs. 50 Crore.<\/h1>\n

The Department of Pharmaceuticals has announced a new Discovery Track under the Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma & MedTech (PRIP) Scheme, offering financial assistance of up to Rs. 50 crore per company, project or portfolio of projects to eligible startups and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) working on innovative pharmaceutical projects.<\/p>\n

The initiative is aimed at encouraging the discovery, development and commercialisation of new medicines and therapies, while enabling startups and MSMEs to participate in the high-risk innovation ecosystem associated with novel drug development.<\/p>\n

New Discovery Track to Address Early-Stage Funding Gap<\/h4>\n

The newly introduced track seeks to address a critical funding gap in early-stage novel drug discovery. Under the initiative, financial assistance of up to Rs. 50 crore will be provided to eligible companies or projects, subject to a minimum 25 per cent co-funding of the project cost by bona fide institutional investors.<\/p>\n

The government said the support is intended to provide large-scale risk capital to startups and MSMEs and encourage institutional investors to participate at an earlier stage of drug development.<\/p>\n

The initiative is expected to help more indigenous New Chemical Entities (NCEs) and New Biological Entities (NBEs) progress from the discovery stage towards clinical development, thereby contributing to the development of a globally competitive pharmaceutical innovation pipeline.<\/p>\n

Startups and MSMEs undertaking NCE or NBE projects at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 1, 2 or 3 are eligible to apply under the new Discovery Track. Supported projects can be taken to higher TRLs, up to TRL 6.<\/p>\n

PRIP Portal Opens for Second Call<\/h4>\n

The online PRIP portal has now opened for submission of applications under the second call of the scheme.<\/p>\n

With a total financial outlay of Rs.5,000 crore, the PRIP Scheme seeks to strengthen India’s pharmaceutical and MedTech research and development ecosystem and support startups, MSMEs and large companies in moving up the innovation value chain.<\/p>\n

The second call covers three priority areas:<\/p>\n

– New Medicines: Including New Chemical Entities (NCEs), New Biological Entities (NBEs) and phytopharmaceutical drugs.
\n– Complex Generics and Biosimilars
\n– Novel Medical Devices<\/p>\n

Financial Assistance Under Other Tracks<\/h4>\n

Apart from the newly announced Discovery Track, applications are also being invited under the Early Stage and Later Stage tracks.<\/p>\n

Under the Early Stage Track, startups and MSMEs undertaking projects at TRL 1, 2 or 3 will be eligible for financial assistance of up to Rs.5 crore per project. The objective is to help such projects progress to higher TRLs, up to TRL 5.<\/p>\n

For projects with an approved total cost of up to Rs. 1 crore, applicants will not be required to provide co-funding. For projects costing more than Rs. 1 crore, the applicant will be required to co-fund half of the portion exceeding Rs. 1 crore.<\/p>\n

Under the Later Stage Track, industry, startups and MSMEs undertaking projects at TRL 4, 5 or 6 will be eligible for financial assistance of up to Rs. 100 crore per project. The assistance will be capped at 35 per cent of the approved total project cost, with the remaining amount to be co-funded by the applicant.<\/p>\n

41 Projects Approved Under First Call<\/h4>\n

The Department of Pharmaceuticals said that under the first call of the PRIP Scheme, 41 projects have already been approved, involving financial assistance of around Rs.1,600 crore.<\/p>\n

Evaluation of the remaining applications received during the first round is currently underway, with further results expected to be announced over the coming month.<\/p>\n

Applicants who submitted projects under PRIP Round 1 have been advised not to resubmit the same projects under the current call.<\/p>\n

Application forms and supporting guidance are available through the PRIP portal. Applicants can also refer to the scheme and scheme guidelines, guidance for concept notes, application-form guidance, the Milestone Descriptor Catalogue, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and the Application Support Toolkit for further information.<\/p>\n

The new Discovery Track is expected to provide additional funding support for early-stage pharmaceutical innovation and encourage greater participation of startups, MSMEs and institutional investors in the development of new medicines, therapies and medical technologies in India.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
