The Ayush services sector has emerged as one of India\u2019s fastest-growing service sectors, with its economic contribution estimated at US$36.92 billion in FY 2024-25, according to a new study conducted by the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS).<\/p>\n

The sector has recorded a 16.91 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) since FY 2022-23 and is increasingly contributing to India’s economic growth through healthcare, wellness, employment generation and Medical Value Travel (MVT).<\/p>\n

The RIS study projects that the Ayush services economy could expand to US$216 billion to US$318 billion by 2047, highlighting its potential contribution to the Viksit Bharat @2047 vision.<\/p>\n

The report was formally released during the 11th Ayurveda Day celebrations in Nagpur on September 23.<\/p>\n

Ayush Sector Emerging as a Major Economic Contributor<\/h4>\n

The study estimates the Ayush services economy at US$36.92 billion in FY 2024-25, representing a 16.91 per cent CAGR since FY 2022-23.<\/p>\n

The findings indicate that Ayush services are becoming a significant component of India’s services economy, with opportunities for further growth through organised healthcare delivery, wellness services, improved infrastructure and international expansion.<\/p>\n

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav said the findings highlight the growing economic potential of the Ayush sector.<\/p>\n

According to Jadhav, the study demonstrates that Ayush represents not only India’s cultural heritage but also an expanding economic sector with growing relevance to healthcare, wellness, employment and international economic engagement.<\/p>\n

Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, said the study provides, for the first time, a nationally scaled assessment of the economic contribution of the Ayush services sector through an establishment-level survey covering all major Ayush systems.<\/p>\n

RIS Director General Professor Sachin Kumar Sharma said the study was based on a national survey of 15,914 establishments across six Ayush systems and provides an evidence-based assessment of the sector’s economic contribution.<\/p>\n

Clinics and Day-Care Centres Account for Major Share<\/h4>\n

According to the report, clinics and day-care centres account for more than 71 per cent of the total revenue generated by the Ayush services sector.<\/p>\n

Standalone clinics generated an estimated US$16.21 billion, while day-care centres contributed around US$10.13 billion.<\/p>\n

Among the different Ayush systems, Ayurveda remained the largest, contributing approximately US$17.73 billion, equivalent to nearly 48 per cent of the sector’s total revenue.<\/p>\n

The study also highlights the growing economic importance of Ayush-based wellness services, including yoga centres, spas and resorts offering Ayush-related treatments and programmes.<\/p>\n

The wellness segment recorded a 21.29 per cent CAGR, while yoga centres witnessed approximately 75 per cent growth in revenue over two years, reflecting increasing demand for preventive healthcare, wellness and holistic care.<\/p>\n

Sector Supports 1.76 Million Livelihoods<\/h4>\n

The Ayush services sector has also emerged as a significant source of employment, directly supporting an estimated 1.76 million livelihoods.<\/p>\n

More than one million jobs are concentrated in local and standalone clinics. Women account for approximately 43 per cent of the overall Ayush services workforce, with female participation exceeding 50 per cent in several organised segments.<\/p>\n

Women constitute more than 60 per cent of the workforce in wellness establishments such as spas and resorts offering Ayush-based services. Their participation stands at around 58 per cent in educational institutions, 57 per cent in day-care centres and 53 per cent in hospitals.<\/p>\n

Ayush Gains Ground in Medical Value Travel<\/h4>\n

The study also highlights the growing role of Ayush in Medical Value Travel (MVT).<\/p>\n

The sector generated an estimated US$1.77 billion in Medical Value Travel revenue during FY 2024-25. Although international patients account for only around five per cent of total patient volumes, they contribute an estimated 15 to 25 per cent of revenues in the hospital segment.<\/p>\n

The report notes that Ayush therapeutic programmes, including Panchakarma and residential yoga programmes, are associated with longer stays by international patients. The average length of stay is estimated to range between five and 11 days.<\/p>\n

Digital presence and quality accreditation are also identified as important factors in attracting international patients. According to the study, establishments with a dedicated functional website have 3.6 times higher odds of attracting international patients, while recognised quality accreditation such as NABH or ISO is associated with approximately twice the odds.<\/p>\n

Sector Could Reach $216\u2013318 Billion by 2047<\/h4>\n

Looking ahead, the RIS study projects that the Ayush services economy could grow from US$36.92 billion in FY 2024-25 to US$216 billion\u2013US$318 billion by 2047.<\/p>\n

The report states that achieving this potential would depend on strengthening infrastructure, quality systems, workforce skills, digital capabilities and access to international markets.<\/p>\n

The study identifies four broad strategic pillars for future growth:<\/p>\n

– Knowledge value chain of Ayush
\n– Enterprise and institutional capabilities
\n– Global competitiveness and Medical Value Travel
\n– Innovation through digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence<\/p>\n

It also calls attention to the need for wider quality accreditation, digital health records, workforce skilling, international readiness and responsible adoption of emerging technologies.<\/p>\n

The findings underline the expanding role of Ayush beyond healthcare and wellness, with the sector increasingly contributing to employment generation, entrepreneurship, services-led economic growth and India’s international engagement in traditional and complementary medicine.<\/p>\n

The RIS study provides an evidence-based assessment of the evolving Ayush services landscape and identifies opportunities to strengthen the sector’s contribution to India’s healthcare, wellness and broader economic development objectives in the years ahead.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
