Ramachandrudu, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, met Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu at Shimla today and held detailed discussions on the damage caused by natural disasters in Himachal Pradesh during the monsoon season.<\/p>\n<p>The central team had visited various disaster-affected areas of the state in September to assess the extent of damage caused by natural calamities. During the meeting, the Chief Minister apprised the delegation of the challenges faced by the state due to recurring extreme weather events and sought greater attention to Himachal Pradesh&#8217;s specific geographical and climatic conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Sukhu said the effects of climate change were becoming increasingly evident in the state, with a rise in incidents such as cloudbursts. He stressed the need for a scientific and comprehensive study to understand the causes and changing patterns of cloudbursts and other extreme weather events in the Himalayan region.<\/p>\n<p>The Chief Minister also urged the Central Government to revise the existing criteria for providing disaster relief assistance, stating that the geographical, climatic and topographical conditions of hill states were significantly different from those of the plains. He emphasized that disaster assessment and relief mechanisms should take these differences into account.<\/p>\n<p>Sukhu highlighted Himachal Pradesh&#8217;s important role in maintaining the ecological balance of northern India and contributing to clean air and environmental sustainability. He also stressed the need to incorporate more tunnels into highway development projects in the state, considering its difficult mountainous terrain.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Secretary K.K.
