He called for a global vision that prioritises empowering others over controlling them, collaborating over competing and creating opportunities for shared prosperity.

Emphasising the central theme of his address, Modi said the world must rethink the purpose of power in an era increasingly shaped by technology, data, knowledge and innovation.

“The vision I have come with is power to empower; beyond the power to control, power to enable; beyond the power to compete, power to collaborate; and beyond the power to succeed, power to help others succeed,” he said.

Welcoming the Bloomberg New Economy Forum to India for the first time, Modi congratulated Michael Bloomberg and his team for bringing together global leaders and experts to discuss critical issues concerning the economy, technology, energy and international affairs.

He said the forum had arrived in India at an important time, when the world was witnessing significant changes in economic relationships, technological capabilities and geopolitical dynamics.

Power Must Be Used to Empower Others

Addressing the changing nature of global power, Modi said technology, data, knowledge and innovation had emerged as defining sources of influence in the 21st century. However, he stressed that the real value of power depended on how it was used and whether it created opportunities for a wider section of society.

Drawing upon India’s cultural and philosophical traditions, he said knowledge, wealth and power acquired their true significance through their ethical use.

He explained that the principle of “Power to Empower” was not merely an idea intended for international discussions but a philosophy reflected in India’s governance and development approach.

According to Modi, India’s progress demonstrates how expanding capabilities can help more people access education, technology, financial services and economic opportunities.

He said the country’s objective was to ensure that its growing capabilities also opened new doors of opportunity for other nations.

“Our constant endeavour is to ensure that India’s capabilities open new doors of opportunity for other countries as well,” he said.

Digital Connectivity Expands Opportunities

Highlighting India’s democratic and technological diversity, Modi referred to the country’s linguistic plurality, approximately 80,000 publications, more than 1,000 television channels and extensive participation in digital platforms.

He said digital technology had become an important instrument for strengthening public participation and democratic discourse, with hundreds of millions of Indians using platforms such as YouTube and Instagram.

Recalling the situation before 2014, he said access to mobile phones, internet connectivity and digital services had often been beyond the reach of many people.

The government subsequently focused on reducing data costs and expanding connectivity to enable students, small traders, rural residents and other sections of society to access information and markets.

He said digital connectivity had gone beyond connecting people physically or virtually and had also connected them with new opportunities.

Modi also highlighted India’s digital payments ecosystem, noting that street vendors and large commercial establishments could use the same technological infrastructure to conduct transactions.

He described this as an example of inclusive technology, through which digital services could be made accessible to people across different economic backgrounds.

India Sharing Digital Capabilities with the World

Modi said India was extending its technological capabilities to other countries, particularly those in the Global South, to support the development of digital public infrastructure.

He cited the CoWIN platform, which was used during the COVID-19 vaccination programme, as an example of Indian technological innovation with wider relevance.

He said the country’s capabilities should benefit humanity and help other nations develop solutions suited to their own needs.

Highlighting the growth of India’s startup ecosystem, Modi said the number of startups had increased from a few hundred in 2014 to more than 2.5 lakh.

He noted that nearly half of the country’s startups originated in smaller cities, while more than 45 per cent had women in leadership roles.

According to him, these developments indicated that opportunities for innovation were increasingly reaching people beyond traditional business and technology centres.

He also linked India’s development model with the government’s focus on empowering citizens rather than making them dependent on public assistance.

Modi said approximately 25 crore people had been lifted out of poverty over the preceding decade, attributing the progress to the country’s development and governance initiatives.

JAM Trinity and Direct Benefit Transfers to Curb Corruption

Explaining the role of technology in public service delivery, Modi highlighted the use of the Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile (JAM) Trinity and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) systems.

He said these mechanisms had helped transfer government assistance directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts, reducing intermediaries and improving the delivery of welfare benefits.

According to him, the systems had helped reduce corruption, improved convenience for citizens and established a more direct relationship between the government and the people.

He said the broader objective of governance should be to equip citizens with the resources and opportunities needed to improve their lives.

Vaccine Supplies to More Than 100 Countries

Referring to India’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Modi recalled the challenges created by shortages of essential medical supplies and vaccines across the world.

He said India had chosen to share its vaccine-manufacturing capabilities with other countries rather than restrict the benefits to its own population.

The country supplied vaccines to more than 100 nations, he said, describing the initiative as an example of how manufacturing capacity could support international cooperation and humanitarian assistance.

Modi also referred to discussions at a recent AI Impact Summit in India, where the potential applications of artificial intelligence in animal welfare were considered alongside its uses for humans.

He said India’s growing technological and economic capabilities should contribute to the well-being of humanity and the wider world.

Calls for Global Cooperation on Climate and Technology

Emphasising the need for a balanced global order, Modi said competition, innovation and national strength must be accompanied by compassion and a commitment to addressing shared challenges.

He identified climate change, water governance and the responsible use of emerging technologies as areas requiring international cooperation.

According to him, the world needs countries that use their capabilities to create shared opportunities rather than concentrate benefits in the hands of a few.

He reiterated that power should not be measured solely by a country’s ability to advance its own interests but also by its capacity to help others progress.

India Exceeded Its 2030 Non-Fossil Energy Target in 2021

Highlighting India’s climate commitments, Modi recalled the target announced under the 2015 Paris Agreement to achieve 40 per cent of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030.

He said India had surpassed the target in November 2021, nine years ahead of schedule, becoming the first G20 country to achieve it.

He described the development as an indication of the transformation underway in India’s energy sector.

Modi also highlighted the growth of the country’s renewable energy capacity, which he said had increased from approximately 75 gigawatts in 2014 to around 300 gigawatts.

He attributed the expansion to the country’s increasing focus on clean energy and sustainable development.

Solar Schemes Empower Households and Farmers

Discussing the impact of renewable energy at the grassroots level, Modi referred to the PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM schemes.

He said these initiatives were helping households and farmers generate solar power, reduce electricity-related expenses and improve their economic prospects.

According to the figures cited in his address, the initiatives had contributed more than 30 gigawatts of capacity and helped reduce carbon emissions by over 30 million tonnes annually.

He said the energy transition was not only about protecting the environment but also about enabling citizens to become participants in the country’s development.

Global Crises Highlight Need for Reliable Partners

Turning to international developments, Modi said the third decade of the 21st century had been marked by successive global crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, regional conflicts and disruptions to supply chains.

He noted that shortages and uncertainties involving critical minerals, energy supplies and international trade had exposed vulnerabilities in the interconnected global economy.

He expressed concern that supply chains, energy resources, minerals, technology and payment systems were increasingly being used as instruments of pressure and geopolitical influence.

According to him, the global connections developed over decades were facing new challenges as countries sought to protect their strategic interests.

Against this backdrop, he said the international community needed reliable partners capable of maintaining supply chains and honouring commitments during difficult periods.

Modi positioned India as a country seeking to contribute to global stability through cooperation and shared progress.

India Emphasises Growth Through Collaboration

Highlighting India’s role in the global economy, Modi said the country’s development model was based on collaboration and inclusive growth.

He pointed to India’s contribution to the supply of generic medicines, its digital identity infrastructure and the presence of more than 2,000 Global Capability Centres serving international businesses.

He said India’s economic progress was linked to its ability to work with other countries and create opportunities for mutual benefit.

“We do not grow at anyone’s cost; we grow with the world and for the world,” he said.

Modi also referred to India’s historical contribution of the concept of zero to mathematics, saying the country continued to follow a spirit of sharing knowledge and capabilities without seeking benefits exclusively for itself.

International Initiatives to Address Shared Challenges

Modi highlighted several international initiatives associated with India, including the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), the International Big Cat Alliance, the Global Biofuel Alliance, the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and Mission LiFE.

He said these initiatives were intended to encourage cooperation in areas such as renewable energy, disaster resilience, biodiversity, sustainable fuels, connectivity and environmentally responsible lifestyles.

He also referred to the guiding principles of “One Sun, One World, One Grid”, “One Earth, One Family, One Future” and “One Earth, One Health”.

According to him, these concepts reflected India’s approach of using its capabilities to connect countries, strengthen partnerships and address challenges affecting people across the world.

He said India’s international engagement was guided by the belief that development should generate benefits beyond national boundaries.

India Records 7.8 Per Cent Growth in April-June Quarter

Addressing India’s economic outlook, Modi cited a growth rate of 7.8 per cent for the April-June quarter, a current account deficit of 0.61 per cent and foreign exchange reserves exceeding $700 billion.

He also said India’s banking system was in its strongest position in decades.

Against the backdrop of international economic uncertainty, he described India as a source of reliability and stability for global businesses and investors.

“In a world full of uncertainties, India offers reliability and stability,” he said.

Modi said India’s economic performance reflected the impact of structural reforms and efforts to strengthen the country’s financial and institutional foundations.

Reforms Driven by Conviction, Says Modi

Highlighting the government’s reform agenda, Modi referred to the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the introduction of insolvency legislation, the consolidation of 29 labour laws into four labour codes and the decriminalisation of hundreds of minor business offences.

He said GST had helped establish a unified national market, while other reforms were intended to improve the business environment and simplify regulatory processes.

He also linked recent sovereign credit rating upgrades to India’s economic reforms and institutional changes.

Emphasising the government’s approach to policy, Modi said reforms were being undertaken as a deliberate choice rather than merely in response to external pressure.

“For us, reforms are not a compulsion. They are a conviction,” he said.

He added that continued reforms and improvements in governance were central to India’s efforts to strengthen its economic position and expand opportunities for businesses and citizens.

Calls for Collective Action to Address Global Challenges

Concluding his address, Modi invoked an ancient Vedic mantra that calls upon people to move forward, speak and understand one another collectively.

He said the world could address its major challenges more effectively through dialogue, cooperation and a shared commitment to progress.

He expressed confidence that the Bloomberg New Economy Forum would provide an important platform for global leaders, policymakers and business representatives to exchange ideas and explore solutions to emerging economic and technological challenges.

Reiterating the central message of his address, Modi said India’s development would continue to focus on expanding opportunities at home while contributing to the progress of other countries.

He stressed that the country’s growing capabilities should serve as a means of empowering others, reinforcing the message that sustainable global progress depends on cooperation, shared opportunities and collective responsibility.

PM Modi Calls for ‘Power to Empower’, Says India Offers Reliability and Stability Amid Global Uncertainty.
