PM Modi Inaugurates Five Development Projects Worth Rs. 3,350 Crore in Ladakh.<\/h1>\n

New Leh Airport Terminal to Handle 35 Lakh Passengers Annually; Nimmu\u2013Padum\u2013Darcha Road, Hydropower Project and Petroglyph Conservation Park Among Key Initiatives.<\/h2>\n

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated and dedicated five major development projects worth around Rs. 3,350 crore in Ladakh through video conferencing, giving a significant boost to the Union Territory’s connectivity, power infrastructure, water security, tourism and cultural heritage conservation.<\/p>\n

The projects include the new passenger terminal building at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, the Nimmu\u2013Padum\u2013Darcha road, the Hanu Small Hydroelectric Project, the associated transmission infrastructure, India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park in Leh, and 40 water bodies developed under a water conservation initiative.<\/p>\n

Addressing the gathering, Modi said the projects would make travel easier, improve electricity infrastructure, enhance water availability and strengthen efforts to preserve Ladakh’s ancient heritage. He congratulated the people of the region and acknowledged the contribution of engineers, labourers, local workers and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) personnel who completed the challenging infrastructure works in the high-altitude terrain.<\/p>\n

New Airport Terminal to Boost Tourism<\/h4>\n

The Prime Minister inaugurated the new passenger terminal at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, constructed at a cost of approximately Rs. 650 crore. The facility is expected to increase the airport’s annual passenger-handling capacity from 10 lakh to 35 lakh, significantly improving air connectivity to the strategically important Himalayan region.<\/p>\n

The terminal incorporates geothermal heating and solar energy systems to address the region’s extreme climatic conditions while promoting environmentally conscious infrastructure development.<\/p>\n

Modi said the government’s objective was to modernise Ladakh’s infrastructure while ensuring that the fragile local environment remained protected. The improved airport facilities are expected to support tourism, create economic opportunities and provide greater convenience to residents and visitors.<\/p>\n

Nimmu\u2013Padum\u2013Darcha Road to Improve Connectivity<\/h4>\n

The Prime Minister dedicated the Nimmu\u2013Padum\u2013Darcha road to the nation, describing it as a significant milestone in improving regional connectivity.<\/p>\n

The approximately 298-kilometre strategic road connects Nimmu in Leh with Darcha through the Zanskar region, providing an important alternative route linking Ladakh with the rest of the country.<\/p>\n

According to the Prime Minister, the road will substantially reduce travel time between key locations, improve access to remote settlements and facilitate the movement of people and essential supplies. It is also expected to strengthen trade, tourism and other economic activities in the region.<\/p>\n

The road’s strategic importance is particularly significant because of Ladakh’s difficult geographical conditions and its dependence on reliable transport routes.<\/p>\n

Hydropower Project to Strengthen Electricity Supply<\/h4>\n

The Hanu Small Hydroelectric Project and its associated transmission infrastructure were also dedicated to the public.<\/p>\n

The project is expected to strengthen the region’s electricity network and improve the availability of power for households, educational institutions, healthcare facilities and local businesses.<\/p>\n

Modi said reliable electricity was essential for improving the quality of life in remote areas. Better power infrastructure would support children’s education, healthcare delivery and small-scale enterprises, while creating favourable conditions for economic development.<\/p>\n

He also referred to ongoing efforts to explore modern power generation opportunities in areas such as Puga Valley.<\/p>\n

Forty Water Bodies to Support Agriculture<\/h4>\n

Emphasising water security in Ladakh’s high-altitude landscape, the Prime Minister dedicated 40 newly developed water bodies under the water conservation initiative known as Project Amrit Him Sarovar.<\/p>\n

The reservoirs, spread across 40 villages, are intended to improve water availability, particularly for agricultural activities during critical cultivation periods.<\/p>\n

Modi said the facilities would help farmers access irrigation water when required, supporting agricultural resilience in a region where climatic conditions and water availability pose significant challenges.<\/p>\n

Infrastructure Expansion Since 2019<\/h4>\n

Highlighting Ladakh’s development since it became a Union Territory in 2019, Modi said the road network had expanded from approximately 1,800 kilometres to more than 4,000 kilometres.<\/p>\n

The number of major bridges had increased from 19 to nearly 75, while the number of helipads had risen from seven to more than 40.<\/p>\n

He also highlighted the expansion of household tap-water coverage from around 3.5 per cent to nearly 99 per cent and the doubling of hospital beds. The ongoing Zojila Tunnel project, he said, would further strengthen all-weather connectivity.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister described Ladakh’s development as a priority for the Central Government, emphasising the importance of infrastructure in improving living standards and creating new economic opportunities.<\/p>\n

Focus on Youth, Education and Sports<\/h4>\n

Modi said the government’s special focus was on Ladakh’s younger generation, stressing that local students should have access to quality education, modern technology and advanced learning opportunities without having to move to other cities.<\/p>\n

A major Centre of Excellence is being developed in Leh, while proposals for satellite campuses of IIT Jammu and IIM Jammu are also being pursued. These initiatives are intended to expand opportunities for higher education, research and skill development within the region.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister also highlighted the implementation of Ladakh’s new sports policy to nurture local talent in ice hockey, winter sports, mountaineering and other disciplines.<\/p>\n

He said efforts were being made to provide young athletes with better training facilities and opportunities to compete at national and international levels.<\/p>\n

Tourism, Agriculture and Local Products<\/h4>\n

The Prime Minister highlighted the growth of winter and adventure tourism, noting that the number of homestays in Ladakh had increased from around 150 to approximately 3,000.<\/p>\n

He also referred to the development of more than 40 border settlements under the Vibrant Villages Programme, aimed at strengthening local economies and generating employment opportunities in remote areas.<\/p>\n

In agriculture, he highlighted the expansion of protected cultivation, with around 11,000 greenhouses operating across the region. These facilities are expected to help farmers improve productivity and increase their incomes.<\/p>\n

Modi also emphasised the commercial potential of Ladakh’s sea buckthorn, handicrafts, GI-tagged apricots, high-altitude floriculture and traditional Pashmina products made by the Changpa community.<\/p>\n

He said the government was working to improve branding, expand market access and strengthen the global identity of local products so that producers could benefit directly from increased commercial opportunities.<\/p>\n

High Court Bench and Digital Connectivity<\/h4>\n

The Prime Minister also referred to the government’s approval in August for establishing a High Court Bench in Ladakh, describing it as an important step towards improving access to justice and making legal services more accessible to residents.<\/p>\n

He highlighted the expansion of BharatNet and high-speed internet connectivity in remote areas, saying digital infrastructure was opening new opportunities for online education, e-governance, local businesses and the marketing of traditional products.<\/p>\n

India’s First Petroglyph Conservation Park<\/h4>\n

Emphasising the importance of protecting Ladakh’s cultural legacy, Modi inaugurated India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park in Leh.<\/p>\n

The park aims to preserve ancient rock carvings and provide visitors with an opportunity to learn about the region’s rich history, artistic traditions and civilisational heritage.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister said Ladakh’s monasteries, Buddhist traditions, historic rock art and cultural festivals represented an invaluable legacy that needed to be protected for future generations.<\/p>\n

Concluding his address, Modi expressed confidence that the development projects would accelerate Ladakh’s progress and improve the lives of its people.
