He said clean energy would play a decisive role in ensuring the country’s energy security, economic stability and sustainable development.

Addressing industry leaders, investors, startup representatives and senior officials from India and abroad, the Prime Minister said the summit was being held at a crucial time when global energy disruptions had highlighted the importance of reliable and sustainable energy sources. This year’s event coincides with the Ninth Assembly of the International Solar Alliance and the Fourth Conference on Green Hydrogen.

Referring to the global economic challenges arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing crisis in West Asia, Modi said 140 crore Indians take pride in the country’s ability to navigate global uncertainties while maintaining robust economic growth.

He attributed India’s resilience to sustained investment and systemic reforms in the clean energy sector over the past decade. He observed that without these investments, the impact of global energy disruptions on the Indian economy could have been considerably more severe.

Emphasising the importance of energy independence, the Prime Minister said continued dependence on fossil fuels would leave economies vulnerable to international disruptions because fossil fuel reserves were limited and concentrated in a few geographical regions.

“The future of energy security lies in clean energy,” he said, highlighting India’s commitment to expanding renewable energy generation and reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.

India Achieves Major Renewable Energy Milestones

Highlighting India’s progress over the past 12 years, Modi said the country had transformed its clean energy commitments into measurable achievements through sustained efforts and policy initiatives.

He recalled India’s commitment at COP-26 to achieve 500 Gigawatts of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030. The country achieved its Paris climate commitment of deriving 50 per cent of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources in 2025, five years ahead of the scheduled target.

India now has more than 50 per cent of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources and has achieved nearly 300 Gigawatts towards its 500-Gigawatt target. The Prime Minister announced an ambitious vision of adding another 500 Gigawatts of non-fossil fuel capacity over the next 10 to 11 years.

Describing the target as challenging, he expressed confidence in India’s capabilities and said the country was determined to achieve it.

He also emphasised that India’s renewable energy achievements and technological innovations could benefit several other countries, particularly those seeking affordable and sustainable energy solutions.

PM Surya Ghar Scheme Benefits Over 65 Lakh Households

Highlighting the success of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in February 2024, the Prime Minister said more than 65 lakh households had joined the rooftop solar movement within approximately 24 to 25 months.

The scheme aims to install rooftop solar systems in one crore households across the country. According to the Prime Minister, nearly one lakh new households are joining the initiative every six days.

He said a study had indicated that the scheme had helped reduce electricity bills by approximately 76 per cent, while lakhs of families had brought their electricity bills down to zero. Some households were also earning additional income by selling surplus electricity to the power grid.

The Prime Minister said the initiative could serve as an effective model for strengthening energy security in several countries.

He also highlighted other government initiatives aimed at integrating solar energy into public infrastructure, agriculture and everyday life.

Connecting more than 44,000 government buildings with solar power is generating annual savings of nearly Rs. 700 crore, he said. Under the PM-KUSUM scheme, more than 30 lakh farmers have received solar irrigation facilities, with each beneficiary of a solar pump saving nearly Rs. 1 lakh annually.

He also referred to the PM Surya Sarovar Yojana, which promotes the installation of solar panels over reservoirs, ponds and lakes. The initiative aims to utilise available water bodies for renewable energy generation while reducing the need for additional land acquisition.

Focus on Green Hydrogen and Solar Innovation

The Prime Minister said India’s clean energy ambitions extended beyond solar, wind, hydroelectric and nuclear power. The country was also advancing green hydrogen production under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to produce 50 lakh tonnes of green hydrogen by the end of the decade.

He also highlighted the beginning of India’s first Green Hydrogen Train, describing it as an important development in integrating clean energy into the transportation sector.

Emphasising the importance of efficient electricity transmission, Modi said renewable energy generation must be supported by a strong distribution network to ensure that electricity produced in solar and wind-rich regions reaches households, farms and industries across the country.

He highlighted the development of Green Energy Corridors, comprising dedicated transmission lines and substations, supported by the One Nation, One Power Grid system. The initiative has integrated five regional electricity grids into a unified network operating at a single frequency.

He added that India had recently set an investment target of approximately Rs. 2 lakh crore to further strengthen its electricity transmission Infrastructure.

Domestic Manufacturing Strengthens Make in India

The Prime Minister attributed India’s renewable energy progress partly to the expansion of domestic manufacturing capabilities.

He said India had earlier depended heavily on imports for solar components, but the situation had changed significantly over the past decade. Solar module manufacturing capacity had increased from approximately 2 Gigawatts to more than 200 Gigawatts, while domestic solar cell manufacturing capacity had reached nearly 40 Gigawatts.

He said the growth of domestic manufacturing demonstrated the success of the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India campaigns, while also strengthening the country’s ability to meet its renewable energy requirements.

Calling for faster implementation of solar energy initiatives, Modi urged states and local bodies to connect government buildings, schools, colleges, hospitals and streetlight networks with solar power.

He also suggested creating healthy competition among states and local administrations to encourage better performance and allow successful initiatives to be replicated elsewhere.

Call for Solar Revolution in Agriculture and Households

The Prime Minister called for expanding the use of solar energy in agriculture beyond the distribution of solar-powered irrigation pumps.

He urged farmers to utilise vacant agricultural land and farm boundary areas for installing solar panels, enabling them to generate additional income while contributing to renewable energy production.

Highlighting the importance of innovation, he said the new era of the solar revolution would be driven not only by adoption but also by technological advancements.

He strongly urged startups, IITs, researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs to develop models capable of meeting the maximum energy requirements of households through solar power.

He suggested developing round-the-clock, all-weather solar solutions, including rooftop solar cooking systems and solar-powered charging facilities for electric two-wheelers and cars.

Such innovations, he said, could help middle-class families save thousands of rupees annually while reducing dependence on imported cooking gas and conventional energy sources.

He also called for developing specialised solar-powered equipment for the dairy and agricultural sectors, including machinery for animal fodder preparation, crop harvesting and post-harvest activities.

Investment Opportunities Worth Over Rs. 20 Lakh Crore

Highlighting the economic opportunities emerging from India’s renewable energy expansion, Modi invited global investors to participate in the country’s clean energy transformation.

He said the renewable energy sector had attracted investments exceeding Rs.15 lakh crore, equivalent to approximately $164 billion, during the past decade.

Of this, more than Rs. 6 lakh crore, or approximately $63 billion, had been invested during the two years following the 2024 RE-INVEST Summit.

The Prime Minister said investment opportunities in India’s renewable energy sector were projected to exceed Rs. 20 lakh crore, equivalent to more than $220 billion, by the end of the decade.

He noted that India’s growing energy demand, large-scale development opportunities and stable policy environment offered significant prospects for international investors.

He also highlighted the employment potential of the renewable energy sector, saying its expansion was generating thousands of jobs in solar panel manufacturing, hardware production, installation, servicing, transportation and other related activities.

He said the transition towards solar-powered households and green-energy-based transportation would create new industries and expand employment opportunities, particularly for the country’s youth.

India Proposes $200 Million Africa Solar Facility

Reaffirming India’s commitment to international cooperation on climate change, the Prime Minister referred to the country’s global message of “One Earth, One Family, One Future”.

He said India was committed to ensuring that developing countries received access to the necessary funding, technology and technical expertise to advance their renewable energy programmes.

In this direction, he highlighted a proposal for a $200 million Africa Solar Facility aimed at supporting solar energy development across African countries.

Concluding his address, Modi said the coming decade would be crucial for achieving global climate targets and building a sustainable energy future.

He expressed confidence that the participants of the summit would contribute significantly towards connecting countries and regions with the global clean energy transition.

He called for collective efforts to build a clean, green and secure future through renewable energy, technological innovation and international cooperation.

PM Modi Inaugurates Bharat Renewable Energy Summit 2026, Calls for Innovation to Strengthen India’s Clean Energy Future.
