Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for Pune Metro projects worth around Rs. 21,800 crore through video conferencing, highlighting the role of modern public transport in improving urban mobility, accelerating economic growth and enhancing the quality of life.<\/p>\n

Extending Diwali greetings to the people of Pune and Maharashtra, the Prime Minister said that the joy of festivals multiplies when new public facilities are added to people’s daily lives. Recalling that he had laid the foundation stone for the first phase of Pune Metro around a decade ago, he said the inauguration of the Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar corridor would provide improved connectivity to a major IT hub, while the new metro line would strengthen links between the old and new parts of the city.<\/p>\n

Describing Pune as a historic centre of ideas and innovation, Modi said the city had emerged as a major hub for information technology, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, startups, manufacturing and innovation. He said Pune was a centre of dreams and aspirations for the country’s youth and that improved metro connectivity would give fresh momentum to its development.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister observed that modern cities were increasingly being judged by their competitiveness and ease of living. Metro networks reduce commuting time, improve convenience and increase urban productivity. Saving time in cities, he said, contributes to economic growth and benefits both poor and middle-class families.<\/p>\n

Highlighting the expansion of India’s metro network, Modi said that over the past 12 years, the network had grown to nearly 1,200 kilometres across 26 cities, serving more than one crore passengers daily. He said India now had one of the world’s three largest metro networks.<\/p>\n

Referring to Maharashtra’s progress, he said that in 2014 only around 10 to 11 kilometres of metro lines were operational in the state. The operational network had now expanded to nearly 175 kilometres, while construction was underway on more than 680 kilometres of metro lines, involving investments exceeding Rs. 2.5 lakh crore.<\/p>\n

He said such investments generated employment for construction workers, engineers and people associated with shops, factories and other businesses. Modi also highlighted the Public-Private Partnership model used in constructing the newly inaugurated corridor, describing it as an example of cooperation between the government and the private sector in infrastructure development.<\/p>\n

Focus on Developing Smaller Cities as Growth Centres<\/h4>\n

The Prime Minister said India’s development journey had involved sustained investment in rural roads, highways, expressways, railway lines, tunnels and bridges. In the coming years, the country would also focus on developing its cities into some of the best urban centres in the world.<\/p>\n

He emphasised that cities were not merely residential spaces but major centres of economic activity. He called for hundreds of smaller cities across the country to be developed as active growth hubs.<\/p>\n

Referring to the Urban Challenge Fund approved in February 2026, Modi said it was backed by Rs. 1 lakh crore in central assistance to mobilise several lakh crore rupees in urban investment. He urged urban local bodies and private sector partners to participate actively in the initiative.<\/p>\n

Highlights India’s Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction<\/h4>\n

During his address, the Prime Minister also highlighted India’s economic performance and progress in poverty reduction. Citing the latest World Bank report, he said around 50 crore people had moved out of extreme poverty over the past 10 to 12 years.<\/p>\n

He said India was now among the world’s fastest-growing major economies while also making significant progress in reducing poverty. According to him, economic growth and poverty reduction were interconnected, as higher government revenues enabled greater public investment in infrastructure and welfare programmes.<\/p>\n

He added that investments in roads, railways, airports, metro systems, electricity, drinking water and gas pipelines were improving living standards while creating employment opportunities.<\/p>\n

Modi also referred to welfare initiatives providing houses, toilets, tap water connections under the Har Ghar Jal programme and cooking gas connections to households. He said these facilities had improved people’s confidence and saved time that could be used for additional income-generating activities.<\/p>\n

Recalling his 25 years as head of a government, he said empowering poor families had remained central to his approach to governance. He referred to the Garib Kalyan Melas launched during his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister, which focused on ensuring that welfare benefits reached eligible beneficiaries.<\/p>\n

He said poverty reduction strengthened the wider economy by creating a new middle class with greater purchasing power, generating demand and opening opportunities for businesses, shops and factories.<\/p>\n

Assures Support to Farmers Affected by Natural Calamities<\/h4>\n

The Prime Minister also expressed concern over the difficulties faced by farming families in Maharashtra due to adverse weather conditions and natural calamities. Acknowledging the hardship caused to farmers, he referred to the water conservation initiatives undertaken in the state and the advance assistance provided by the Maharashtra government.<\/p>\n

He also mentioned the transfer of funds under the PM-KISAN scheme and assured farmers of the Centre’s support.<\/p>\n

As the festive season continues, Modi appealed to people to remember drought-affected families, farmers and others facing difficulties, and ensure that the spirit of Diwali reaches their homes as well.<\/p>\n

Concluding his address, the Prime Minister said collective participation and united efforts, guided by the principle of ‘Sabka Prayas’, were essential for achieving the vision of a developed India.
