In a landmark moment for Indian cinema, Kiran Rao\u2019s film ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has been chosen as India\u2019s official entry for the 2025 Oscars. This satirical take on patriarchy triumphed over 29 competing films, including prominent titles like ‘Animal’ and Cannes winner ‘All We Imagine As Light’.<\/p>\n

The film stars rising talent Pratibha Ranta, alongside veteran actors Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan. Ranta, who plays the lead role of Jaya Singh, expressed her excitement about the Oscar selection, stating, \u201cI couldn\u2019t believe it,\u201d as she reflected on the thrilling announcement.<\/p>\n

‘Laapataa Ladies’ tells the story of two young brides who get lost on a train, delivering a powerful message that has resonated with audiences. Ranta remarked, \u201cI\u2019m so fortunate to be part of such a brilliant story,\u201d emphasizing the film’s emotional impact.<\/p>\n

At just 24, Ranta’s ascent in the film industry has been remarkable. Originally from Tikkar, Himachal Pradesh, she moved to Shimla for her education and later graduated in filmmaking from Mumbai. After making her debut in ‘Qurbaan Hua’, she gained widespread recognition with ‘Laapataa Ladies’ and Sanjay Leela Bhansali\u2019s ‘Heeramandi’.<\/p>\n

Often compared to fellow Shimla native Preity Zinta, Ranta noted the irony of their shared background and expressed her ambition to carve her own path in the industry.
