As the war in Ukraine drags on into its fourth year, a staggering 70% of children\u2014around 3.5 million\u2014are now living without access to essential goods and services<\/strong>, according to new data released today by UNICEF<\/strong>. The humanitarian agency warns that material deprivation<\/strong> among children has skyrocketed, rising from 18% in 2021 to current crisis levels.<\/p>\n

Material deprivation refers to a lack of basic necessities such as nutritious food, warm clothing, safe shelter, heating, clean water, and educational materials<\/strong>\u2014all vital for a child\u2019s health, development, and well-being.<\/p>\n

War’s Heavy Toll on Childhood<\/strong><\/h3>\n

“The war in Ukraine continues to devastate the country\u2019s children,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell<\/strong>. \u201cInvesting in them and the services they rely on is the best way to secure Ukraine\u2019s future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since the war escalated in February 2022<\/strong>, at least 2,786 children have been killed or injured<\/strong>, according to UNICEF. A third of Ukraine\u2019s children now live in homes without functioning water and sanitation systems<\/strong>, and nearly half have no access to a safe space to play<\/strong>, either indoors or outdoors.<\/p>\n

Basic Services Under Relentless Attack<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Frequent attacks on critical infrastructure<\/strong>\u2014including power stations, water treatment facilities, homes, schools, and hospitals\u2014have left entire regions without access to fundamental services. As poverty deepens, children bear the brunt of the crisis.<\/p>\n

UNICEF notes that children near frontline regions<\/strong>, those with disabilities<\/strong>, displaced children<\/strong>, and those in institutional or foster care<\/strong> are especially vulnerable.<\/p>\n

A Shrinking Future: Demographic Alarms<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The report also points to alarming demographic trends<\/strong>, with a 35% drop in birthrates<\/strong> and millions of women and children displaced<\/strong> since the start of the war. The dual pressures of war and economic hardship are creating what experts fear could be a lost generation<\/strong> of Ukrainian children.<\/p>\n

UNICEF\u2019s Call: Urgent, Long-Term Investment<\/strong><\/h3>\n

While humanitarian aid has met immediate needs, UNICEF emphasizes that long-term investments<\/strong> in education, health, and social protection systems<\/strong> are crucial to Ukraine\u2019s recovery.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must put children, their education, safety, health and development at the heart of Ukraine\u2019s recovery,\u201d said Russell. \u201cAbove all, Ukraine\u2019s children must be protected from further harm. They need peace.\u201d<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n
