A brutal wave of violence has swept through communities near the city of Bara in Sudan\u2019s North Kordofan State, leaving more than 450 civilians dead<\/strong>, including at least 35 children and two pregnant women<\/strong>, according to reports confirmed by UNICEF. The attacks, which occurred over the weekend in villages including Shag Alnom<\/strong> and Hilat Hamid<\/strong>, mark one of the deadliest episodes of violence against civilians in the country\u2019s ongoing conflict.<\/p>\n

Dozens more individuals were reportedly injured, and many remain unaccounted for, prompting fears that the true toll on children and families may rise<\/strong> in the coming days.<\/p>\n

In a powerful statement issued Monday, the United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF)<\/strong> condemned the killings in the \u201cstrongest possible terms,\u201d calling them a \u201cterrifying escalation of violence\u201d<\/strong> and a \u201ccomplete disregard for human life and international humanitarian law.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThese attacks are an outrage,\u201d<\/strong> UNICEF said. \u201cCivilians \u2013 particularly children \u2013 must never be the target of attack.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Children Among the Dead: \u201cViolence Against Children Is Unconscionable\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Among the 450 confirmed dead are at least 24 boys and 11 girls<\/strong>, many believed to have been killed in their homes or while fleeing the violence. Eyewitness reports and preliminary investigations suggest that entire families were targeted, and some children are believed to have witnessed the deaths of their parents or siblings.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo child should ever experience such horrors,\u201d<\/strong> UNICEF stated. \u201cViolence against children is unconscionable and must end now.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The organization expressed grave concern that the number of child casualties could grow<\/strong>, as search-and-rescue operations continue and communication lines in the region remain severely disrupted.<\/p>\n

UNICEF is calling on all parties involved in the Sudanese conflict to cease hostilities immediately<\/strong> and uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law<\/strong>, including the core principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution<\/strong> in the conduct of military operations.<\/p>\n
