In a decisive move to address the growing frequency and intensity of natural disasters in Himachal Pradesh, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah<\/strong> has directed the immediate formation of a multi-sectoral central team<\/strong> comprising domain experts from across the country. The move comes as the hill state grapples with recurrent flash floods, landslides, cloudbursts, and torrential rains, particularly during the ongoing South West Monsoon.<\/p>\n

During a recent high-level meeting, it was noted that Himachal Pradesh is facing a significant environmental challenge, with disasters leading to loss of lives, destruction of infrastructure, disruption to livelihoods, and environmental degradation<\/strong>. In response, Amit Shah ordered the constitution of a technical central team<\/strong> consisting of experts from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)<\/strong>, Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) Roorkee<\/strong>, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune<\/strong>, geologists<\/strong>, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Central Team Already on Ground for Damage Assessment<\/h3>\n

In parallel, the Central Government has deputed an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT)<\/strong> to assess the damage caused by recent floods, flash floods, cloudbursts, and landslides<\/strong> in the state. Notably, this deployment was done in advance, without waiting for a formal memorandum from the state<\/strong>, highlighting the Centre\u2019s proactive stance. The team has been visiting affected areas from July 18 to 21, 2025<\/strong>, to conduct on-the-spot, first-hand assessments.<\/p>\n

Robust Financial Support for Himachal Pradesh<\/h3>\n

Reaffirming the commitment to stand by states in times of crisis, the Centre\u2014under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/strong>\u2014has approved a Rs. 2006.40 crore outlay for recovery and reconstruction<\/strong> in Himachal Pradesh, targeting areas hit by extreme weather events in 2023. The first instalment of Rs. 451.44 crore<\/strong> was released on July 7, 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the Centre released the first instalment of Rs 198.80 crore<\/strong> from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF)<\/strong> on June 18, 2025<\/strong>, to support immediate relief measures<\/strong>. The assistance aims to help local authorities manage emergency needs and extend aid to affected citizens.<\/p>\n

Extensive On-Ground Relief Efforts<\/h3>\n

To aid rescue and relief operations, the Central Government has also ensured logistical support<\/strong>, including the deployment of 13 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams<\/strong> across the state. Military and Air Force units have been mobilized as needed, emphasizing the Centre\u2019s all-hands-on-deck approach in dealing with the unfolding crisis.<\/p>\n

A Coordinated National Response<\/h3>\n

The formation of the expert team and swift deployment of IMCT reflect the Centre\u2019s evolving strategy to mitigate the impact of climate-induced disasters<\/strong> through coordinated, multi-agency response efforts. The inclusion of premier institutions like IITM Pune and IIT Indore also points toward a data-driven, scientific approach to disaster assessment and preparedness.<\/p>\n

A Commitment Without Discrimination<\/h3>\n

“The Central Government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stands firmly with all states, without any discrimination<\/strong>, in their hour of need,” a senior official emphasized. The comprehensive support to Himachal Pradesh illustrates this principle in action.<\/p>\n
