In a major boost to southern India\u2019s infrastructure and energy landscape, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday laid the foundation stone, inaugurated, and dedicated development projects worth over Rs. 4,800 crore in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The projects span across ports, highways, airports, railways, and the clean energy sector, underscoring the Union Government’s continued commitment to modernising infrastructure and fostering inclusive growth in the region.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the public event, the Prime Minister declared, \u201cInfrastructure and energy are the backbone of any state’s development. Over the last 11 years, our focus on these sectors has reflected the high priority Tamil Nadu\u2019s development holds for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Strengthening Regional and National Connectivity<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A central highlight of the visit was the inauguration of a new advanced terminal at Thoothukudi Airport<\/strong>, constructed at a cost of Rs. 450 crore. Designed to handle over 20 lakh passengers annually<\/strong>, up from .3 lakh, the terminal is set to transform air connectivity in southern Tamil Nadu. The development will spur tourism, corporate travel, and boost local education and healthcare infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the Prime Minister dedicated two significant road infrastructure projects<\/strong> worth approximately Rs. 2,500 crore. These will enhance connectivity between the Delta districts and Chennai while also improving access to Thoothukudi Port, a key logistics hub in the region.<\/p>\n

Boosting Maritime and Energy Capabilities<\/strong><\/h3>\n

PM Modi emphasized the transformation underway at V.O. Chidambaranar Port<\/strong>, recalling his prior visits to inaugurate the Outer Harbour Container Terminal and the International Container Terminal. The latest investments continue the mission launched in 2014 to elevate Tamil Nadu\u2019s port infrastructure to global standards.<\/p>\n

He also laid the foundation for a key transmission project<\/strong> related to the 2,000 MW Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, to be built at Rs. 550 crore. \u201cThis project will play a pivotal role in supplying clean energy and strengthening Tamil Nadu\u2019s power infrastructure,\u201d the Prime Minister stated.<\/p>\n

Railway Modernization and Cultural Connectivity<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Underscoring the Centre\u2019s commitment to transforming rail infrastructure, PM Modi highlighted the electrification of the Madurai\u2013Bodinayakkanur railway line<\/strong> and the redevelopment of 77 railway stations<\/strong> across Tamil Nadu under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. He praised the successful deployment of Vande Bharat trains<\/strong> and India\u2019s first vertical lift rail bridge (Pamban Bridge)<\/strong> as examples of innovation and progress.<\/p>\n

He also drew a cultural bridge between Thoothukudi and his parliamentary constituency of Varanasi through initiatives like the Kashi-Tamil Sangamam<\/strong>, celebrating India\u2019s shared heritage.<\/p>\n

FTA with UK and Global Confidence in India\u2019s Growth<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Returning from a four-day overseas tour, the Prime Minister noted the signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the United Kingdom<\/strong>, which he described as a turning point in India\u2019s global trade outlook. “99% of Indian products will now be tax-free in the UK. This means more exports, more manufacturing, and more jobs\u2014especially for Tamil Nadu\u2019s MSMEs, startups, and youth,” he said.<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cToday, the world sees its own growth in India’s growth,\u201d reflecting the rising global trust in India\u2019s economic potential.<\/p>\n

Welfare & Green Energy Push<\/strong><\/h3>\n

PM Modi also reviewed the success of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana<\/strong> in Tamil Nadu, noting over 1 lakh applications<\/strong> and 40,000 completed rooftop installations<\/strong>. He emphasized that the scheme is not only delivering clean and free electricity<\/strong>, but also generating green jobs<\/strong>, especially in urban and semi-urban regions.<\/p>\n

Reaffirming the government’s support for the fisheries sector<\/strong>, he said the Blue Revolution<\/strong> aims to empower coastal communities and expand the maritime economy.<\/p>\n

Cultural and Historical Reverence<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Prime Minister paid homage to great Tamil leaders and freedom fighters, including V.O. Chidambaram Pillai<\/strong>, Veerapandiya Kattabomman<\/strong>, and Alagu Muthu Kon<\/strong>, and acknowledged the contributions of national poet Subramania Bharati<\/strong>, whose birthplace is near Thoothukudi. \u201cThoothukudi\u2019s history is India\u2019s strength. Its future will now be its pride,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n

He fondly recalled gifting the famed Thoothukudi pearls<\/strong> to philanthropist Bill Gates<\/strong>, and how they continue to be a symbol of India\u2019s rich maritime legacy.<\/p>\n

Conclusion: Vision for a Developed Tamil Nadu<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Concluding his address, the Prime Minister said, \u201cThoothukudi is witnessing the dawn of a new chapter in development. The steps we take today in infrastructure, energy, and connectivity are laying a strong foundation for a Developed Tamil Nadu and a Developed India<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event was attended by Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi<\/strong>, Union Ministers \u00a0Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu<\/strong> and Dr. L. Murugan<\/strong>, and other senior dignitaries.<\/p>\n
