The Gaza Strip is teetering on the edge of a full-scale famine, with key food security and nutrition indicators surpassing critical thresholds, according to a stark warning issued today by three United Nations agencies \u2014 the World Food Programme (WFP)<\/strong>, UNICEF<\/strong>, and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Data from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Alert<\/strong>, the internationally recognized system for measuring food crises, shows that two out of three core famine thresholds<\/strong> \u2014 extreme food consumption gaps and acute malnutrition \u2014 have now been breached<\/strong> in parts of Gaza. The third threshold \u2014 starvation-related deaths \u2014 is suspected to be rising but remains difficult to verify due to near-total collapse of Gaza\u2019s health infrastructure.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople Are Already Dying of Hunger\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cThe unbearable suffering of the people of Gaza is already clear for the world to see,\u201d said WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain<\/strong>. \u201cWe need to flood Gaza with large-scale food aid, immediately and without obstruction\u2026 People are already dying of malnutrition, and the longer we wait, the higher the death toll will rise.\u201d<\/p>\n

The agencies stressed that famine is not a distant threat<\/strong> \u2014 it is an unfolding reality. More than 500,000 people<\/strong>, or nearly a quarter of Gaza\u2019s population<\/strong>, are experiencing famine-like conditions<\/strong>. An additional 75% of the population is classified at emergency levels of hunger<\/strong>, according to the IPC Alert.<\/p>\n

Hunger and Malnutrition Skyrocket Among Children<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The situation for Gaza\u2019s youngest residents is especially grim. Rates of acute malnutrition<\/strong> among children under five in Gaza City<\/strong> have quadrupled<\/strong> since February, rising to 16.5%<\/strong>. As of July, more than 320,000 children<\/strong> \u2014 virtually every child under five in Gaza<\/strong> \u2014 is at risk of acute malnutrition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the deadliest form of hunger, and we are seeing it increase at an alarming rate,\u201d said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell<\/strong>. \u201cWe need immediate, safe and unhindered humanitarian access across Gaza\u2026 Without it, parents will remain powerless to save their children from a condition we know how to treat and prevent.\u201d<\/p>\n

In June alone, 6,500 children<\/strong> were admitted for treatment for malnutrition \u2014 the highest monthly number since the conflict began. In July, 5,000 more cases<\/strong> were reported in just the first two weeks. Fewer than 15% of essential nutrition treatment services<\/strong> remain functional in the Strip.<\/p>\n

Food and Water Are Scarce \u2014 And Access is Blocked<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The food crisis in Gaza is not caused by the absence of food<\/strong> but by the inability to access it<\/strong>, the UN warns. Conflict, collapsed local food systems<\/strong>, and severe restrictions on humanitarian access<\/strong> have left families unable to feed themselves<\/strong> or access even basic assistance.<\/p>\n

More than 39% of Gaza\u2019s population<\/strong> is now going entire days without food. Meanwhile, fuel shortages<\/strong>, water scarcity<\/strong>, and severed supply chains<\/strong> have crippled what remains of Gaza\u2019s agricultural and food distribution infrastructure.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are starving not because food is unavailable, but because access is blocked,\u201d said FAO Director-General QU Dongyu<\/strong>. \u201cWe urgently need safe and sustained humanitarian access and immediate support to restore local food production and livelihoods.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s Needed to Prevent Famine Now<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To meet basic humanitarian food and nutrition needs<\/strong> in Gaza, over 62,000 tons of life-saving aid<\/strong> are required every month. This must be complemented by the resumption of commercial imports<\/strong>, including fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, and protein sources such as meat and fish \u2014 all essential to a diverse and healthy diet.<\/p>\n

The UN agencies also call for:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • An immediate and sustained ceasefire<\/strong>, to halt violence and allow humanitarian operations.<\/li>\n
  • Safe and unimpeded humanitarian access<\/strong>, including the full use of all border crossings<\/strong> and secure humanitarian corridors.<\/li>\n
  • Revival of commercial supply chains<\/strong>, to restore local markets and bakeries.<\/li>\n
  • Protection of civilians and humanitarian workers<\/strong>, and urgent efforts to restore basic services, especially water, health, and sanitation<\/strong> infrastructure.<\/li>\n
  • Investment in long-term recovery<\/strong>, including agriculture, fisheries, and market rehabilitation, to rebuild Gaza\u2019s shattered food system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Despite limited humanitarian pauses and partial border openings, aid flows into Gaza remain a fraction of what is needed<\/strong> to prevent starvation. Thousands of lives<\/strong> \u2014 especially those of children \u2014 now depend on whether the global community acts swiftly and decisively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
