In a significant breakthrough, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Ajay Kumar alias Raju Gupta, the absconding former Director of the Idol India Group of Companies, for his alleged role in a large-scale financial fraud in Assam. The arrest took place on July 30, 2025, in Kolkata after years of evasion.<\/p>\n

Ajay Kumar, who had been on the run for several years, was wanted in connection with a financial scam involving the Idol India Infrastructure Ltd., Idol India Debenture Trust, and Idol India Projects Ltd. The company had reportedly duped thousands of innocent investors in Assam by floating fraudulent investment schemes under the promise of high returns with interest, only to misappropriate the collected funds.<\/p>\n

The CBI registered the case following a notification from the Government of Assam dated May 6, 2013, and pursuant to an order by the Supreme Court of India dated May 9, 2014, in Writ Petitions (Civil) No. 401\/2013 and 413\/2013. After a detailed investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet on December 22, 2022, before the Special Judge, CBI Court in Guwahati. The charges against Ajay Kumar and others include criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, and cheating under Sections 120B, 406, 409, and 420 of the Indian Penal Code, along with violations under Sections 4, 5, and 6 of the Prize Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act.<\/p>\n

Despite multiple attempts to locate and apprehend him, Ajay Kumar managed to evade arrest until a dedicated CBI team successfully traced his whereabouts in Kolkata. Acting on concrete leads, the agency arrested him and produced him before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, North 24 Parganas, at Barasat, West Bengal. The court granted transit remand for his transfer to Assam.<\/p>\n

Ajay Kumar will be produced before the Special Judge, CBI Court, Guwahati, later today, where further legal proceedings will continue.<\/p>\n
