Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, AVSM, NM, today assumed charge as the 47th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS)<\/strong>, marking another distinguished milestone in his illustrious career with the Indian Navy. The ceremonial appointment was solemnly commemorated with the Vice Admiral paying homage to India\u2019s fallen heroes by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi.<\/p>\n

With a naval career spanning over 37 years, Vice Admiral Vatsayan brings to the position a wealth of operational experience, strategic insight, and leadership acumen. Commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1, 1988<\/strong>, he is a specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems and an alumnus of the 71st course of the National Defence Academy, Pune<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A Legacy of Sea Command and Strategic Leadership<\/h3>\n

Throughout his service, Vice Admiral Vatsayan has served onboard numerous frontline warships and has held several key sea commands. He was part of the commissioning crew of INS Mysore<\/strong> and INS Nishank<\/strong>, as well as the pre-commissioning crew of ICGS Sangram<\/strong>, reflecting his early involvement in India’s maritime modernization. He commanded several warships including INS Vibhuti<\/strong>, INS Nashak<\/strong>, INS Kuthar<\/strong>, and INS Sahyadri<\/strong>, the last of which he led as its commissioning Commanding Officer.<\/p>\n

His leadership extended to pivotal strategic appointments. In February 2020<\/strong>, he assumed command of the Eastern Fleet<\/strong> during a crucial period marked by high operational tempo following tensions in Eastern Ladakh. Under his command, the fleet executed multiple operational deployments and international naval exercises.<\/p>\n

A Scholar and Strategist<\/h3>\n

Vice Admiral Vatsayan is a graduate of premier military institutions, including the Defence Services Staff College (Wellington)<\/strong>, the Naval War College (Goa)<\/strong>, and the National Defence College (New Delhi)<\/strong>. He has held critical staff roles in Naval Headquarters such as Director of Personnel (Policy)<\/strong> and Principal Director Naval Plans<\/strong>, contributing to long-term strategic planning and policy development.<\/p>\n

Promoted to Flag Rank in 2018, he served as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans)<\/strong>, later leading the Eastern Naval Command<\/strong> as Chief of Staff in 2021. In that role, he played a vital part in enhancing operational readiness and infrastructure development on India\u2019s eastern seaboard.<\/p>\n

Championing Integration and Indigenisation<\/h3>\n

Before assuming charge as VCNS, Vice Admiral Vatsayan served in the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS), first as Deputy Chief of IDS \u2013 Operations<\/strong>, and then overseeing Policy, Plans and Force Development<\/strong>. In these roles, he was instrumental in advancing jointness among the three Services, streamlining force development, and pushing forward the national agenda of indigenisation in defence capability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Family and Personal Life<\/h3>\n

Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan is married to Sarita<\/strong>, and the couple has two children. Their son, an Economics graduate, has earned an MBA from the Indian School of Business, while their daughter holds a degree in Humanities.<\/p>\n
