In a landmark move to enhance green cover and restore ecological balance in the Aravalli hills, Union Ministers\u00a0Bhupender Yadav<\/strong> and Manohar Lal<\/strong> today presided over the ceremonial launch of the \u2018Matri Van\u2019 initiative<\/strong> in Gurugram<\/strong>, Haryana. Spread across 750 acres<\/strong> in the Aravalli hill area along the Gurugram-Faridabad road, the initiative is part of the \u2018Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam\u2019<\/strong> campaign and is envisioned as an urban forest that will serve as the \u201cheart and lungs\u201d of Delhi-NCR<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The launch event was organized by the Haryana Forest Department<\/strong> as part of Van Mahotsav 2025<\/strong>, with the participation of dignitaries including\u00a0Rao Narbir Singh<\/strong>, Haryana\u2019s Minister for Industries and Forests, along with senior officials, public representatives, and local stakeholders.<\/p>\n

A Green Legacy for Future Generations<\/h4>\n

The \u2018Matri Van\u2019 (Mother Forest)<\/strong> is a theme-based ecological project<\/strong> that not only aims to increase forest cover but also to restore native Aravalli biodiversity<\/strong>, promote urban sustainability<\/strong>, and foster public engagement in environmental conservation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the launch, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav<\/strong> stated:<\/p>\n

\u201cThis green cover will act as a heart and lung for the whole of Delhi-NCR. Matri Van will offer a clean and serene environment, giving both youth and the elderly a space to connect with nature and lead a healthier, stress-free life.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He acknowledged the Haryana Government\u2019s pivotal role<\/strong> in making land available for this green transformation and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/strong> for championing initiatives like \u2018Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam\u2019<\/strong>, a symbolic drive encouraging people to plant trees in honor of their mothers.<\/p>\n

Manohar Lal: Call to Become \u2018Van Mitras\u2019<\/h3>\n

Union Minister Manohar Lal<\/strong>, who also oversees Housing, Urban Affairs, and Power, emphasized the urgency of tackling carbon emissions<\/strong> through both technology and tradition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile carbon capture technologies are vital, preventing deforestation and encouraging community tree planting must become a civic tradition. Every citizen should become a Van Mitra<\/em>\u2014a friend of the forest,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He highlighted that India\u2019s non-fossil fuel power capacity has crossed 50%<\/strong>, showcasing how the country is taking strides in sustainable development.<\/p>\n

He urged cities like Gurugram<\/strong> to lead by example in green buildings, eco-tourism, biodiversity parks<\/strong>, and urban forestry.<\/p>\n

Matri Van Components: An Urban Oasis with Cultural Roots<\/h3>\n

The forest will include theme-based plantation groves<\/strong> and eco-friendly public infrastructure<\/strong>, designed to reconnect citizens with both nature and culture<\/strong>. Notable features include:<\/p>\n

  • Bodhi Vatika<\/strong>: Trees like Bargad, Peepal, Gullar, Pilkhan<\/li>\n
  • Bamboosetum<\/strong>: Varieties of Bamboo species<\/li>\n
  • Aravalli Arboretum<\/strong>: Native Aravalli trees<\/li>\n
  • Pushp Vatika<\/strong>: Flowering species<\/li>\n
  • Sugandh Vatika<\/strong>: Aromatic plants<\/li>\n
  • Medicinal Plants Vatika<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Nakshatra & Rashi Vatika<\/strong>: Astrological-themed plantings<\/li>\n
  • Cactus and Butterfly Gardens<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Infrastructure for Public Use:<\/strong><\/h4>\n
      \n
    • Nature trails, cycle tracks, yoga and meditation zones<\/li>\n
    • Sitting areas and gazebos<\/li>\n
    • Parking at four corners<\/li>\n
    • Sprinkler\/misting systems using treated water<\/li>\n
    • Waterbodies for conservation and flood control<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The forest will also see removal of invasive species<\/strong> such as Prosopis juliflora (Kabuli Kikar)<\/em> and replanting with native, long-rotation species like Neem, Bael, Dhak, Imli, Semal, and Aravalli endemics such as Dhauk, Kullu, and Salar.<\/p>\n

      \n

      \u00a0Community Participation: A Multi-Stakeholder Vision<\/h3>\n

      The project is designed to foster community ownership<\/strong>, with active participation from:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • CSR partners<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • NGOs<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs)<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • Multinational corporations<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • School children<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • Government departments<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        This broad-based collaboration is expected to create a people\u2019s movement for urban forestry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        Green Corridors and Beyond<\/h3>\n

        Earlier in the day, the Ministers visited the Aravalli Jungle Safari Park<\/strong> and participated in sapling plantation drives at five sites in IMT Manesar<\/strong>, identified by HSIIDC. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to integrate green corridors and increase forested zones in and around urban centers.<\/p>\n

        Under the Vision of Mission LiFE<\/h3>\n

        Minister Bhupender Yadav connected the initiative to Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment)<\/strong>, which calls for sustainable practices such as:<\/p>\n

        • Saving food, water, and energy<\/li>\n
        • Effective solid and e-waste management<\/li>\n
        • Banning single-use plastics<\/li>\n
        • Promoting a healthy lifestyle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          He reiterated that these values are embedded in the Matri Van project.<\/p>\n
