India\u2019s defence production has achieved a historic milestone, soaring to an all-time high of Rs. 1,50,590 crore in the Financial Year 2024-25. This marks an impressive 18% increase<\/strong> over the previous year\u2019s production of Rs. 1.27 lakh crore, and a staggering 90% surge<\/strong> since FY 2019-20, when the figure stood at Rs. 79,071 crore.<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Defence announced the record-breaking achievement today, attributing the growth to a robust and maturing defence industrial base powered by policy reforms, growing private sector involvement, and a focused push for indigenisation under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat<\/strong> initiative.<\/p>\n

Defence Minister Lauds Defence Ecosystem<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh<\/strong> hailed the development as a \u201cclear indicator of India\u2019s strengthening defence industrial base.\u201d He credited the Department of Defence Production<\/strong>, Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs)<\/strong>, and the increasingly dynamic private sector<\/strong> for playing a critical role in achieving this milestone.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis performance is the outcome of consistent reform, dedication, and the united vision of building a self-reliant defence manufacturing ecosystem. It reflects our commitment to reducing dependency on imports and building a world-class indigenous capability,\u201d said the Minister.<\/h5>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Sector-Wise Contribution and Growth<\/strong><\/h3>\n
    \n
  • Public sector manufacturers<\/strong>\u2014including DPSUs and other PSUs\u2014contributed around 77%<\/strong> of the total defence production.<\/li>\n
  • The private sector\u2019s share<\/strong> rose to 23%<\/strong> in FY 2024-25, up from 21% in the previous year\u2014an encouraging sign of increasing private investment and innovation in the defence space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Production growth figures:<\/p>\n

    • DPSUs and PSUs<\/strong>: 16% growth<\/li>\n
    • Private Sector<\/strong>: 28% growth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      This diversified growth across segments is being attributed to enhanced ease of doing business, policy liberalisation, production-linked incentives, and long-term capability development programs initiated over the past decade.<\/p>\n

      Aatmanirbhar Bharat Yields Tangible Results<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      The significant rise in defence output is a key marker of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India)<\/strong> mission, which prioritises reducing import dependency and expanding indigenous manufacturing.<\/p>\n

      Under this initiative, the government has:<\/p>\n

      • Increased focus on domestic procurement for the armed forces.<\/li>\n
      • Introduced positive indigenisation lists.<\/li>\n
      • Streamlined defence procurement procedures.<\/li>\n
      • Enabled start-ups and MSMEs to participate in defence contracts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Record Defence Exports Complement Production Surge<\/strong><\/h3>\n

        Adding further strength to the sector\u2019s performance, India\u2019s defence exports also touched a record high of Rs.23,622 crore in FY 2024-25<\/strong>, reflecting a 12.04% growth<\/strong> over the previous year\u2019s export figure of Rs. 21,083 crore.<\/p>\n

        This dual success in both production and exports reinforces India’s emergence as a credible player in the global defence supply chain, and a key exporter of military equipment and systems to friendly nations.<\/p>\n

        Looking Ahead<\/strong><\/h3>\n

        With continued policy support, expanding participation of private entities, and a growing international footprint, India\u2019s defence manufacturing sector is poised for sustained growth and global competitiveness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
