In a formal appeal to the Government of India, Captain Jagdish Verma (Retd), Chairman of the United Front of Ex-Servicemen (JCOs & OR) Himachal Pradesh, has submitted a request urging the inclusion of Defence Forces as a special category<\/strong> in the upcoming 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The letter, addressed directly to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, emphasizes the unique and demanding nature<\/strong> of military service, which, Captain Verma asserts, deserves distinct treatment in pay and allowances<\/strong> compared to civilian government roles.<\/p>\n

Titled \u201cRequest for Inclusion of Defence Forces in the 8th Central Pay Commission as a Special Category\u201d<\/em>, the representation outlines the extraordinary responsibilities shouldered by armed forces personnel, from hazardous field duties to long-term family separations and constant readiness to respond to national emergencies.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe military\u2019s role is markedly different from that of civilian government employees. With duties often involving life-threatening risks, military personnel face dangers that most other public servants do not,\u201d said Captain Verma.<\/h5>\n<\/blockquote>\n

He further noted the psychological toll and familial challenges that stem from frequent postings in hostile terrains and remote areas<\/strong>, which significantly affect the personal lives and well-being of service members and their families.<\/p>\n

Highlighting the limitations of a generalized pay structure<\/strong>, Capt. Verma argued that the current model of clubbing military personnel with civilian employees under the same pay commission framework fails to account for the realities of military life<\/strong>. He strongly advocated for the inclusion of specialised allowances and benefits<\/strong> that are reflective of the armed forces\u2019 operational environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cSoldiers endure long stretches away from their families, frequently being posted in harsh and remote areas, affecting their mental well-being and family life,\u201d he added.<\/h5>\n<\/blockquote>\n

According to Capt. Verma, designating the Defence Forces as a \u201cspecial category\u201d<\/strong> within the 8th CPC would serve as both a symbolic and practical acknowledgment<\/strong> of their crucial role in safeguarding national security.<\/p>\n

The appeal by the United Front of Ex-Servicemen (JCOs & OR) HP comes at a time when discussions around the constitution of the 8th CPC are gaining momentum.
