A massive cloudburst<\/strong> wreaked havoc in Chositi village<\/strong> of Kishtwar district<\/strong> on Thursday, leaving at least 46 people dead<\/strong>, dozens injured, and many others trapped under debris. The incident occurred between 12 noon and 1 PM<\/strong>, at a time when a large number of pilgrims had gathered in the region for the ongoing Machail Mata Yatra<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Officials said that 167 people<\/strong> have been rescued so far, with 38 reported to be in critical condition<\/strong>. As night fell over the mountainous terrain, emergency workers raced against time in difficult conditions, using limited equipment to pull survivors from under thick layers of mud and rubble. The death toll is expected to rise<\/strong> as search efforts continue in the remote and rugged region.<\/p>\n

Disaster Hits Yatra Route<\/h3>\n

Chositi, the last motorable point before the Machail Mata temple<\/strong>, is a vital base for the annual yatra, which began on July 25<\/strong> and was scheduled to continue till September 5<\/strong>. Pilgrims begin their 8.5 km trek to the 9,500-feet-high shrine<\/strong> from this very village. The sudden cloudburst caught many off-guard, turning the sacred trail into a zone of devastation.<\/p>\n

Leaders React to the Tragedy<\/h3>\n

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah<\/strong>, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), confirmed the scale of the tragedy and said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI just spoke to the Union Home Minister @AmitShah Sb to brief him about the developing situation in Kishtwar. The news is grim & accurate, verified information from the area hit by the cloud burst is slow in arriving. All possible resources are being mobilised from within & beyond J&K to manage the rescue operations. I\u2019m not going to be speaking to channels or news agencies. The government will share information as & when possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/strong> also expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives:<\/p>\n

\u201cMy thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the cloudburst and flooding in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir. The situation is being monitored closely. Rescue and relief operations are underway. Every possible assistance will be provided to those in need.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Union Home Minister Amit Shah<\/strong>, in a statement, said:<\/p>\n

\u201cSpoke with the LG and Chief Minister of J&K on the cloudburst in Kishtwar district. The local administration is conducting relief and rescue operations. NDRF teams have promptly been rushed to the site. We are closely monitoring the situation and stand firmly with the people of Jammu and Kashmir through every situation.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Relief and Rescue Operations<\/h3>\n

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)<\/strong>, local police, and army teams have been deployed to assist in the rescue mission. However, challenging terrain, blocked roads, and communication blackouts<\/strong> have made operations extremely difficult.<\/p>\n

Helicopters have been pressed into service to airlift critically injured persons to nearby hospitals, and temporary shelters are being set up for displaced families. Local volunteers, too, have joined the effort, bringing food, water, and emergency supplies to the affected.<\/p>\n

With the yatra suspended indefinitely and unpredictable weather continuing in the region, the administration remains on high alert.
