In a scathing attack on the Himachal Pradesh government, BJP MLA Inder Singh Gandhi from Balh assembly constituency in Mandi district has condemned Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s decision to shift the Atal Medical Research University from Ner Chowk to Sarkaghat, calling it “unfortunate, unjust, and a betrayal of public trust.”<\/p>\n

Speaking to the media, Gandhi alleged that the announcement made by the Chief Minister on the occasion of the 15th August Independence Day celebration has deeply hurt the sentiments of the people of Mandi district.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not just about shifting a university. This is about playing with the emotions of the people who have invested hope, trust, and land into this institution over the past seven years,\u201d said Gandhi.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

University Well-Established in Ner Chowk<\/strong><\/h3>\n

He emphasized that Atal Medical Research University has been operational in Ner Chowk for the past seven years, during which hundreds of students have completed their education. For this purpose, 125 bighas of land had already been acquired and developed.<\/p>\n

The MLA also pointed out that a separate 200 bighas of land had earlier been identified in the Mandal area of the local gram panchayat for future expansion. This land was inspected several times by officials from the revenue department, university authorities, and local panchayats and was deemed completely suitable.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven the previous BJP government under former CM Jai Ram Thakur had planned to develop the university near the Medical College, which is only about 2 kilometers from Ner Chowk, making it more accessible for students and the public,\u201d he added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Political and Public Backlash<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Inder Singh Gandhi criticized the CM\u2019s Independence Day announcement, stating that a national festival meant to inspire citizens was instead used to demoralize them. \u201cRather than encouraging the public, the CM chose to announce a decision that disrespects the mandate and aspirations of Mandi\u2019s people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He further accused the CM of misleading the public due to his failure in delivering tangible development in the state.<\/p>\n

The BJP has united in its opposition to the move. Former CM and BJP Legislative Party leader Jai Ram Thakur has also demanded an immediate rollback of the decision. Joining the protest, local trade unions, religious bodies, and social organizations have voiced strong opposition.<\/p>\n

Warning of Statewide Agitation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Gandhi warned the government of a strong public backlash if the decision is not reversed. \u201cIf the government fails to respect public opinion, the people will give a fitting response in the coming days,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n

A memorandum addressing the issue has already been submitted to the Governor. Prominent BJP leaders including State Vice President Payal, District President Nihal Singh Sharma, Zila Parishad Chairperson Pal Verma, General Secretary Manchli Thakur, Karanveer, President Kuldeep, Rajendra Rana, BJP Media Incharge Rakesh Walia, and former Trade Association President Govind Thakur were present during the submission.<\/p>\n
